The movie had almost nothing to do with winning a lottery. A Filipino man's wife dies and he gambles away his money and owes a bundle to the local mob. His adult daughter finally leaves when men with guns threaten her father and she resettles in Australia. He's dying of a strange disease and his daughter (a nurse) becomes his caregiver. This was sappy in the extreme and it seemed like his new millions had zero impact on his life and barely mentioned in the film. A young girl's brother is executed in Taiwan during the 1950s and she travels to the big city to retrieve his body for burial. She gets tricked by the locals, but manages to win them over. A pleasant 'feel good' kind of a film that was also a complete immersion in the culture of the time.  'The tale within the tale'- Fog vs. Cloud: the mission is to become part of the scenery. It's the standard 'PI-Missing Person' genre plotline, but what makes it different is that it's a pro-gay movie and Val Barber is bisexual and no shame is attached. He has an affair with a man and a woman. However, the 'Big Reveal' is that the grandmother was really helping her granddaughter (who wasn't missing) to expose a high ranking official who was sexually abusing young girls (masturbating in front of them). Grandma & 'the missing girl' were using Barber to flush out more victims of the sexual predator....
