Weekly Cleaning

Watched 'WILD REEDS' (Kanopy). It's another film that went almost completely over my head. The film is a 'gay coming of age' film that's set in France during the early 1960's and deals with the final phase of Algeria's War of Independence. I should have read a Wikipedia article about these real events before I watched the film. After Algeria won independence there was a mass exodus of French nationals back to France. This undoubtedly caused lots of political friction in France because I'm sure that the 'new immigrants' were felt to be 'not really French'. "83" Metascore and I would only go to "74" because I was so unfamiliar with the political context. From 'SAN FRANCISCO Chronicle'- "Wild Reeds is a sober, heartfelt piece of work, sensitively directed and lovingly photographed -- though slightly dull, if we're going to be perfectly honest." 

Finished 'THE BEAST IN ME' (Netflix).  At a book signing at the end of the film, Aggie Wiggs reads this from her book about the incident:

"Karma is not about cosmic payback. Karma is more like seeds we plant & we reap what we sow. Karma is our inheritance and our birthright." 

12pm: The PC is 'Off' and preparing for a trip to Planet Fitness and then to Schnucks for beer, soda, pretzels. 

1225pm: To Planet Fitness...45"Cross, 45"Treadmill, 30"Recumbent Bike, 30"Cross...TWO HOURS AND 30 MINUTES; watched 'THE ASSISTANT' (Netflix)- Julia Garner (OZARK) stars as a young, yet competent 'term employee' at a morally bankrupt NYC 'start up' company. Women are treated as less than human. This is what the 'Me Too Movement' was trying to expose and this movie might be a more effective presentation of their aspirations. "79" Metascore and I would go to "86"; with Julia Garner;  more of RICK BEATO with a producer of JOHN LENNON; 2 episodes of 'KILLER IN PLAIN SIGHT' (Amazon Prime).

Finished JORDAN JENSEN on 'WE MIGHT BE DRUNK'.

More 'BLOOD COAST' (Netflix). I shut it down 8 minutes into episode #3. A script that concerns a somewhat corrupt narcotics team clashing with violent drug dealers is certainly not a novel premise, but in this case it works. I'll most definitely continue watching when the second season is released on 12/9.

Still unseasonably warm with a mix of sun & clouds. Watched 'MAGPIE' (Kanopy- borrowed 2 days ago).  It's basically a tale of 'Adultery & Revenge' although this isn't made clear until the last few minutes of the film. A wealthy couple live in a modern villa in the English countryside. He's a successful author, she is a housewife (she used to be in publishing) and their young daughter is co-starring in a big budget film that's being shot  near their home. Dad falls 'in lust' for the female star of the film, but his wife is several moves ahead. "69" Metascore and I would boost that to "80".
