Fr 5/25/18

Up 730am; In the mid 80's by 10am and almost 90 with thunderstorms in the forecast for later.

Wrote up THE BOX GARDERN, Carol Shields, and THE AMALGAMATION POLKA, Stephen Wright for the blog.

Netflix disc, 'HUGO POOL'; an odd film with lots of character actors- A young woman who runs a Los Angeles pool service cleans over 40 pools in a day, and links up with a cavalcade of quirky individuals; Malcolm McDowell/ Sean Penn/ Robert Downey Jr./ Richard Lewis/ Cathy Moriarty, and many more (Chuck Barris!!??). (Robert Downey Sr.- dir.)

Then, the penultimate 'SAFE'; Way too convoluted to be believed- A clumsy approach like a limp Agatha Christie where a rag-bag of suspects are presented and you get to guess who dunnit, and you're always perplexed at the end because there's no way you could have offered an intelligent guess. Harlan Coben at his lowest, and it's hard for me to believe that he was involved in this at all.

1245pm- reading 'PSTALEMATE'; 1st time for the new AC- it's finally that humid (and hot). Monkeyed around with the Lester Del Rey novel, but it has to be the worst book I've read in ages. One dense, joyless paragraph after another with no payoff. The premise seems to be that extrasensory perception in humans would have some negative tradeoffs is a worthy premise, but it seemed like all the juice had been sucked out of the idea. No Fun...

Just before 1pm I got on the bike to drop the disc off at the Monroe PO. On the way I decided that this one hour ride would be today's workout- and I'd graze around for something more worthy to read.

2pm- 5pm I read downstairs, found an excellent Western novel that I'd never read. I MUST go through these stacks with a fine tooth comb- there's gold in them thar hills!
Then, in the tub for a couple of warm ones and Big Mama Thornton while heavy storms rolled through the area. I turned the AC on before I left, and it works like a charm.

Watched 'SUNSHINE HOTEL' (Amazon Prime) A documentary about a flophouse hotel in the Bowery of  NYC. Interviews with a handful of guys who are hopelessly behind the eight ball, and mental illness, drugs ,and alcohol doesn't do any of them any good.
