Th 10/11/18- Day Three

Up and out of bed by 6am and the phone alarm was set for 615am.
A
At the breakfast buffet by 645am; scrambled eggs/ 2 sausages/ english muffin/ slab of pastry.

Back to the room with a sketchy Internet connection, but it does work, but ya gotta keep at it. And, more news on CNN about the devastation in Florida.

At Elsie's House at 810am. and I met Nancy, the house manager. I watched them eat  breakfast, chatted, and I left for LA Fitness about 945am and was on the machines by 10am. 30" Cross (Arctic Monkeys).  30" Walk (The Melvins). 30" Bike (In Treatment). 30" Cross (Allman Bros. Fillmore). 30" Recumbent Bike (TV- CNN). 30" Cross (Happyish). 10" Steam/ lap in the poDol/ whirlpool/ another 5" in the steam room/ another lap.

Drove west on Bell to Deseret; 6825 West Bell; a little hard to find, but worth it. I got a six dollar pair of jeans. And back to Paradise Lane about 310pm- in time to see Lucy before she ended her day at 330pm. Melissa, Lannie's daughter and accountant for the company, came in about 320pm to drop off their paychecks.

Ripped from an email to Janny-

"This afternoon I finished the workout at LA Fitness and then went back to the house about 315pm. Lucy leaves at 330pm and is relieved by Rachel, and I briefly me Melissa.  She stopped in to drop off their paychecks- Boy, she really looks young! When Lucy left, Rachel started talking about her background. She's a Navajo indian and grew up on a reservation near Flagstaff, AZ. This was one of the most fascinating conversations I've had in a long, long time. She told me about growing up 'in the tribe' and how she became 'the whitest Navajo you will ever meet' (her words). Rachel is getting married in February and her future husband is currently working as a landscaper in Florence, AZ- about sixty miles southeast of Phoenix. And, they communicate by writing letters because they both like to write! She opened up about all this after I told her about the WWII letters between Jen and Ken Sr. Her fiance also also grew up on the reservation, but he had a more traditional Indian upbringing and he speaks the language- she doesn't, and he would like to someday come back to the reservation as 'a couple of successful professionals'. And this is the kicker....They are going to have a beach wedding in San Diego, California! Rachel has relatives that live in the Los Angeles area.
Rachel's smart as a whip, and I wish her the best, but I don't think that she will loom large in Ken senior's future- she's a young woman with goals!  Currently she's working 70 hours a week, and although she's stopped her technical training (nursing/ elderly care) for a bit, she wants to continue as soon as she is able.  I can see her as,  'A Lannie of The Future'."

EMBRACE THE SUCK-

This trip hasn't been as horrendous as I had imagined. It's more 'interesting' than 'fun', but I watched an episode that I downloaded from a Netflix series that I watched during today's workout that seemed to illuminate this adventure. The show's called 'Happyish' and it's about a couple that live in Woodstock, NY and the husband works in Advertising in NYC. He's working on an advertising account with the US Army, and one of his Army clients talks about a phrase that he learned during the Iraq War. It was 'E.T.S'- EMBRACE THE SUCK'. He felt that the only way his guys could get through that adverse experience was to 'E.T.S' , and that's what I'm doing.....

So, EMBRACE THE SUCK......seeya...kw
