We 6/5/19

We 6/5/19

Up 530am; sticky, with temps to 90 and a fifty-fifty chance of rain this afternoon- and for the next several days.

Watched an Italian film, 'GUN CITY' (Netflix) An excellent drama about class warfare and corruption in the early 1920's in Barcelona, Spain. Anarchists steal army weaponry and use them against the police and company owners to to enforce Leftist demands. Later it's revealed that the governor and his men stole the guns dressed as anarchists. He wanted to ramp up the violence so that popular opinion would demand military intervention. Although not in the movie, one can surmise that this kind of political and social unrest paved the way for Fascism.

Then watched, 'LIMITLESS' (Netflix) Bradley Cooper/ Robert De Niro  An 'Airport or Beach' type of concept with a dynamite sound track and a hyperbolic and frenetic cinematic quality.

"NZT is a mysterious drug that enhances human memory and intelligence, while acting as a nearly perfect antidepressant and anxiolytic. Dealers claim it unlocks 100% of the brain, referencing the oft repeated myth that only “20%” of our brains are normally used. It increases intelligence to superhuman levels and results in perfect recall for the extent of its activity. The post-use crash and side effects are, however, commensurately bad, and it is this which initially prevents the FBI (and others) simply mass producing and employing the drug."

Trying to fix the small problem with the screen saver. I changed the power settings so that the monitor and the PC NEVER turn off. I think this screwed with the screen saver, but I learned that the power setting change requires a restart. I guess I'll see tomorrow when I power up.

Called State Farm about 'umbrella policy'. Signed up for $321 a year. My assets cannot be drained and State Farm lawyers will handle all lawsuits. Well worth it, but I want to call Dax tomorrow to see if he thinks it's a wise move, or maybe Ameriprise offers some kind of better idea.

115pm: To the gas station at Durkin for some bags of wood chips (ten bucks for four bags), then on to the 'Y'.
45" Walk (TV all workout). 45" Recumbent Bike (Talked to Ed, the retired shop teacher. He had just bought a new Subaru SUV. I hadn't seen him since early last winter. He's 74. 45" Cross. 30" Walk. 30" Cross.

Huge thunderstorm rolled through the area during the workout. This has to be one of the best places in the city to view a summer storm- A wide open field with a clear southwest view.

Home to soak and read more Burke and listen to Jeff Tweedy's band.

First episode of 'WHEN THEY SEE US' (Netflix). A dramatized account of the five black kids who were unjustly targeted and accused of raping a white female jogger in Central Park, NYC.  'Wilding' becomes part of the contemporary lexicon; with Felicity Huffman.

Then re-watched (didn't remember any of it) part of the David Letterman interview with Howard Stern.' MY NEXT GUEST NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION'. I cannot see the appeal of this guy.
