Up 640am: Sunny and hot with temps in the upper 80's.
Watched Netflix disc 'DOWNLOADING NANCY'. From the Village Voice review:
"The jump cuts and nonlinear narrative are gratuitously stylish, and when you peel away this film's complex performances, at the core of its drawn-out suicide spectacle is pain so extreme, so alienating, and, in the end, so pointless."
But, this is precisely the reason that I liked it. I enjoyed the stylish, nonlinear narrative and the cast really did deliver a complex performance. Unfortunately, suicide is so prevalent that maybe the question of 'pointless' should be re-examined and this film will most definitely start some interesting conversations about sex, marriage, intimacy, and suicide.
Then I watched 'KNIVES OUT' (Amazon Prime). I almost always hate 'The Agatha Christie Treatment'- a mob of suspects are introduced and the reader or viewer is required to uncover the motives and the identity of the perpetrator. A competent writer would never divulge the true culprit or method before he intended. If the reader or viewer solves the puzzle before it has been revealed, then you're dealing with a very poor story teller. But this film is entirely different, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and the 'whodunit' is so convoluted, no one could figure out even a small part of the entire story. A fantastic cast; with Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas ('KNOCK KNOCK'), Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, and Christopher Plummer.
And finally the last part of FEAR CITY: NEW YORK VS. THE MAFIA (Netflix) from last night.
***Activated my new 'tap' Visa card. I don't think I've seen a check-out register where this would work, but I didn't even know what it was until I got the new card.
Then watched some more of the 'GETTING DOUG WITH HIGH' with Eric Andre who suffers a little from marijuana anxiety.
230pm: preparing for the walk to the Wabash PO to mail the Netflix disc.
255pm. Parkview, Country Club, Laurel, Chatham Rd. South to Wabash PO. Back same way. 2 HRS. 5 MINS. Mp3. 'Beaster' ~ SUGAR, 'Blues Dream' ~ Bill Frisell, 'Elephant' ~ WHITE STRIPES.
READ downstairs and listened to LIVE LOS LOBOS.
In the tub with BIO OF ORNETTE COLEMAN and COSMIC RAPE. Listened to LIVE DICKY BETTS BAND, THE WALKMEN~ 'Bows and Arrows', LIZ PHAIR on SAM JONES.
Watched 'A DOCUMENTARY- CAPTIVE' (Amazon Prime). A woman claims that she was held by a local man as his sex slave for ten years, but many saw her in the neighborhood and knew that she was living with her lover's parents. She clearly doesn't seem to be a woman who had been held against her will and her primary defense is that ' you don't walk in my shoes....you weren't there'. Still, where is the proof that her allegations are true?
Then I watched episode 6 of 'MODERN LOVE' (Amazon Prime). Julia Garner has 'daddy issues' with her boss. Can a young woman be involved with a man that reminds her so much of the father she wishes she had?... Somewhat creepy, yet compelling- by intent...
