We 7/22/20
Up 645am: Overcast to partly sunny, humid with temps to mid 80's.
I wrote up 'THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP' for the blog.
I found an hour documentary on Amazon Prime where John Irving discusses his craft: Irving competed as a wrestler from age fourteen to his early thirties...He sees wrestling as a metaphor for writing- they both require much practice (re-writing) and the smallest of details are constantly repeated...He is very knowledgeable of his characters' occupations...Each book takes five years or more because of this attention to detail...In later novels he wrote in a shack on a tiny Canadian island that one of his wife's relatives won in a poker game in the 1930's.
Then watched 'THE DARKNESS' (Netflix). On a camping trip to The Grand Canyon with his family a young boy removes some sacred stones that guard the nexus to another dimension. A plot point is that autistic children can act as a conduit for spirits on other planes of existence; with Kevin Bacon, Radha Mitchell, and Paul Reiser.
I watched a couple of YouTube reviews of the film- they both hated it. But a viewer mentioned the film The Babadook and I said, "The Babadook is one of the finest haunting films ever made! That one I loved, and this one I barely tolerated. "
Then watched 'PUNCHING THE CLOWN' (Amazon Prime). A struggling comedic folk singer tries to make it on the dubious LA club scene... "Like James Taylor on smack"...The lyrics to his songs were hilarious and the script was wry and ironic- another pleasant surprise; with Henry Phillips, as himself... more or less.
Wrote Janny an email thanking her for the tip to try Body Quest.
2pm: Preparing to mow the lawn... It's like a jungle out there!
220-320pm. A little raking and trimming but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
350pm. Walk around Wash. Pk. South side, Vine, Walnut and down the panhandle on the north side. On the road up to Parkview and down to 940. ONE HOUR AND 20 MINS. Mp3, 'A Tribute To Jack Johnson' ~ MILES, 'Electr-O-Pura~ YO LA TENGO.
Downstairs to read THE COSMIC RAPE and listen to an excellent old Van Morrison tape from Chris' s collection.
I spotted a biography of Ornette Coleman on the shelves and in the tub, 'ORNETTE COLEMAN : A HARMOLODIC LIFE and listening to ' Egypt Station '~ Paul McCartney, then listened to 'Off Camera'- Sam Jones interview with Carey Mulligan.
Then watched 'ELECTRIC SLIDE' (Amazon Prime). A chic 80's New Wave bank robbery film somewhat based on actual events- fashionably cool, slick, hip, and with a great soundtrack; with Chole Sevigny, Patricia Arquette, and Jim Sturgess as the bank robber, Eddie Dodson.
And finally I watched about half of a sixty minute episode of, The Reunion Show of Season 1 'BEYOND THE POLE' (Amazon Prime).
