Watched 'MUD' (Kanopy). Two 14 year old boys who live on the Mississippi find a boat in the trees. It was swept up during a storm and the kids meet a mysterious stranger who needs the boat to reunite with the love of his life.  It's a really well written script (especially the dialog between the two boys) that attempts to deliver some quirky insights into the meaning Truth & The Meaning of Love.  Some might see it as corny, but the middlebrow viewpoints are valid and embraced by many in this area of the country. The movie was filmed in Southeast Arkansas near DeWitt. The character of Mud is hiding on the Mississippi near Eudora, Arkansas. This is near the border with Louisiana and Alabama; with Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Sam Shepard, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Paulson, Michael Shannon, Joe Don Baker. 15 wins & 39 nominations. "76" Metascore and I would go to "85". 

Watched 'THE COUNTESS AND THE RUSSIAN BILLIONAIRE' (Amazon Prime- 60"). It's a puff piece about a fabulously rich couple and the twist is that he has cut her out and they live apart. What happened to the billion dollars that he stole from Russia?  An extraordinary claim: "Everything has failed and I'm down to my last $70 million dollars". A crazy Russian TV show was mentioned. Apparently a panel of experts (and the audience?) on the program dissect the failing marriage of a rich and famous couple and share their opinions with the national audience. I'm surprised we don't have anything like this in the west because the premise is almost too tacky to avoid.

More 'THE ECHOES OF SURVIVORS: Inside Korea's Tragedies' (Netflix). I shut it down 12 minutes into episode #4. I can't believe that this is the same 'Christian' outfit that was kidnapping random people and confining them in 'for profit' work camps. This went on for a couple of decades so it almost proves systemic corruption in South Korea. CORRECTION: The first two episodes deal with 'BROTHERS' HOME' which is the Christian outfit that kidnapped & jailed random people as a solution to the homeless problem. And the second two episodes are about the Korean pastor who raped young girls and women in his congregation. And there are two more stories and each one is two episodes in length.

Watched 'MAGPIE' (Kanopy- borrowed 2 days ago).  It's basically a tale of 'Adultery & Revenge' although this isn't made clear until the last few minutes of the film. A wealthy couple live in a modern villa in the English countryside. He's a successful author, she is a housewife (she used to be in publishing) and their young daughter is co-starring in a big budget film that's being shot  near their home. Dad falls 'in lust' for the female star of the film, but his wife is several moves ahead. "69" Metascore and I would boost that to "80".
