Su 10/11/20- First Use of DVD Player in Months
Su 10/11/20
Up 8am after reading and finishing 'KILL THE MESSENGER' very early this morning. Sunny with temps to just above 80.
***I tried to play 'THE DARK HORSE' on the living room PC and it wouldn't play. It's not the player because it ran another disc perfectly. I went downstairs and tried the DVD player/ MONITOR that I haven't used since last winter and 'THE DARK HORSE' played, so I watched downstairs. I'm glad I didn't send it back without seeing it because it was a fine film. It was based on the true story of Maori speed-chess master Genesis Potini. Suffering from mental illness this man is able to organize a children's chess club that was able to beat the best that New Zealand had to offer. A subplot about a kid (nephew of Genesis?) whose father headed a motorcycle gang, The Vagrants and wanted his son to forget the chess club and join the gang ("Because life is hard and nobody got anywhere just playing games"...or something to that effect). Hard to believe premise, but definitely added some violent drama to a film about chess. But, really the film's moral is just the age old story of learning to overcome very difficult circumstances- A 'feel good film' without bushels of corn.
Watched the penultimate episode of Season I,'I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE' (Netflix). They never go for the easy gags and feel right at home in the wildly absurd. I hope that there is another season.
A couple of hits and then I watched 'THE FORCE' (Netflix). The Oakland California Police Department has been under a cloud of suspicion for decades. There is massive distrust between the community and the actions of the city's police. The Oakland Police Commission was created to give civilian oversight to the department and also there has been federal oversight of the OPD for over seventeen years. Commissioners are fired and hired at a very unusual rate, but I thought the first chief seemed to be the kind of guy they were looking for until he was caught trying to coverup an in-house prostitution ring. After checking the current situation in Oakland on the Internet it seems that not much has changed in the few years since this documentary was released. Great documentary.
315pm: Began the Weekly Cleaning and then a walk in the beautiful and balmy Indian Summer weather.
420pm...to Monroe PO via Edwards and back same... ONE HOUR AND 45 MINS... Mp3... MAYER HAWTHORNE, MATTHEW SWEET. MEAT PUPPETS.
***When I walked in the phone rang and I took a survey. Very young black guy with a baby squalling in the background..."Have you ever heard of "Rod...BLAA... GOI... VO... TISH"??
In the tub and began 'Humans' by DONALD WESTLAKE and listening to THE EELS, DINOSAUR JR., THE WIPERS.
Watched 'BAD DAY FOR THE CUT' (Amazon Prime), at the last minute I decided to watch a slick vampire film '30 DAYS OF NIGHT' (Amazon Prime). The film is set in the farthest town in the US which is located in Alaska. The night lasts a full month and a group of vampires come to the area to use the locals as food during the long, long night. I didn't watch the last thirty minutes, but I'll probably get back to it.
