Watched 'CHUNGKING EXPRESS' (Kanopy). A terrific Art Film that was a little confusing yet that's the way it was intended. I had to watch an 'Explanation of Chungking Express' on YouTube to understand what happened. The film is in two parts and set in a very hectic and distorted Hong Kong of the mid 1990's. The first section is about a cop who runs into a female drug dealer in a wig and sunglasses who was organizing a group of mules to smuggle a large quantity of drugs. At the airport, they split with her drugs and the cop runs into her later in a bar. I had hoped that this storyline would continue, but it changes to a different cop and the budding relationship between him and a counter girl at an urban mini-market. She cleans his apartment while he's out and she loves 'California Dreaming' by the Mama's and Pappa's- this song is an integral part of the movie.  This is a 'director's film' and very dreamlike, and a most effective, yet avant garde way of telling a cinematic story. Eight wins & 19 nominations. "78" Metascore and I would boost that to "89". From SLANT MAGAZINE: "To Wong, love isn't something you can talk about; words are inadequate, empty, inevitably reductive. Love is something you see, sense, feel, and Chungking Express is one of Wong's purest evocations of its excitement and heartbreak." 


Watched 'NORWAY MASSACRE: The Survivors Story' (45"- Amazon Prime).  Interviews with survivors of the Utoya camp massacre.  From Wikipedia: "The 2011 Norway attacks, also called 22 July or 22/7 in Norway, were two domestic terrorist attacks by far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik against the government, the civilian population, and a Workers' Youth League (AUF) summer camp, in which a total of 77 people were killed." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Norway_attacks

We 8/15/18 Up 820am; overcast, clammy, and threatening. Rain predicted all day and tomorrow- none so far; 915am. Watched 'MAGPIE' (Kanopy- borrowed 2 days ago).  It's basically a tale of 'Adultery & Revenge' although this isn't made clear until the last few minutes of the film. A wealthy couple live in a modern villa in the English countryside. He's a successful author, she is a housewife (she used to be in publishing) and their young daughter is co-starring in a big budget film that's being shot  near their home. Dad falls 'in lust' for the female star of the film, but his wife is several moves ahead. "69" Metascore and I would boost that to "80".
