Sa 11/30/19

Sa 11/30/19 Up 735am: Periods of rain, drizzle, and chance of light snow through tomorrow- to about 50 today. Watched Netflix disc, 'Medicine For Melancholy'. I reported this disc missing. It should have arrived last week. A couple awake after a drunken hookup and grow to know each other over the next 24 hours. A cinematic valentine to the city of San Francisco with some slightly grating information about gentrification and race; Wyatt Cenac and Tracey Heggins. Then 'PARTS YOU LOSE' (Hoopla) I have one more choice and this is the last day of the month! A young deaf boy takes in a wounded fugitive. He tells no one, and cares for man in a barn on his family's farm and they develop a kind of friendship; with Aaron Paul, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Scoot McNairy. Shot near Manitoba, Canada in the dead of winter. 120pm: PC is 'Off' and I'm filling in the form to get the $47 for the shingles shot from YSA. Read for a while and then to the Wabash PO an...

Fr 11/28/19

Fr 11/28/19 Up 730am: Cloudy, rain to begin late this afternoon or early evening and to continue through the weekend- to 40. I noticed an ad for 'THE REPORT'(Amazon Prime) on The Drudge Report, and decided that I must see it! It concerns the cover-up of the CIA's 'Enhanced Interrogation Techniques' program and the senate investigator who worked for over five years to make it public. Even though the agency knew that the torture techniques were not effective, they continued the program and then made up 'false/ positive' results; with Adam driver, Annette Bening, and Jon Hamm- Steven Soderbergh directs. Then watched, 'AWAKE' (Netflix) A man is forced off the road, crashes, and wakes up in a hospital and he can't remember anything. The body of a dead girl is in the trunk and he's being framed for a series of murders. He didn't do it, but it was the sheriff's son. If the man was a detective in the town, how come nobody recognized him...

Th 7/28/19- THANKSGIVING

Th 7/28/19- THANKSGIVING Up 745am: Cloudy, calm, and some drizzle by late afternoon- To upper 30's. Watched the last two hours plus of, 'THE IRISHMAN' (Netflix). Based on the 2004 book by Charles Brandt, 'I HEARD YOU PAINT HOUSES' that tells the story of hit-man, Frank Sheeran, who was probably responsible for the murders of Joey Gallo and Jimmy Hoffa; Robbie Robertson- (Music), and Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Marin Ireland in key small roles. I loved the film, but I wish it was an eight to ten hour mini-series. Then, 'END OF WATCH' (Netflix) The story of two cops on patrol in gang infested Hispanic neighborhoods in contemporary LA- A terrific police action/ thriller; with Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Natalie Martinez, and Anna Kendrick. *****My first Thanksgiving that I didn't visit the Brandenburgs. I'm fine with this.....Any holiday based on overeating and football is of absolutely no interest to me. 145pm: PC is 'Off...

We 11/27/19- New Living Room Lamp

We 11/27/19 Extremely windy conditions with gusts over 60 mph. Of course, today is trash day, but I'm not going to put out the big blue can until the wind dies down a bit- Cloudy with temps to about 40. Buddy knocked over the living room table lamp and broke the bulb. The body of the lamp is in fine shape, but I have no idea how to reattach the lamp shade, so I'll go over to Jeffrey Alans later to find the answer. Watched 'THE IRISHMAN' (Netflix) with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Bobby Cannavale, Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin, and Al Pacino. Since the film is over three and a half hours, I watched not quite half and I'll save the rest for tomorrow. The next two episodes of 'JACK RYAN' (Amazon Prime), and then watched some more of 'THE IRISHMAN'- One hour and 48" left for tomorrow. 130pm: to the 'Y'. 45" Walk (TV all workout). 45" Recumbent Bike. 35" Cross. 35" Walk. 35" Cross. It was pretty busy, so I had to...

Tu 11/26/19- The Shingles Shot

Tu 11/26/19 Up 630am: Cloudy and rain in the forecast all day- to upper 50's. Watched Netflix disc, 'THE INDIAN RUNNER'. Sean Penn was inspired by the song, 'Highway Patrolman' on Springsteen's album, 'NEBRASKA'. Penn was dating Springsteen's younger sister at the time. Penn wrote the screenplay and this was his directorial debut; with David Morse, Viggo Mortensen, Patricia Arquette, Charles Bronson, Sandy Dennis, Dennis Hopper, and a very small role for Benicio Del Toro. Shot in Nebraska. Watched the bonus features and then watched, 'BIKRAM: YOGI, GURU, PREDATOR' (Netflix). The similarities to this man and Donald Trump are glaringly unavoidable! Both men are crooked, rich narcissists who believe their own lies and are convinced that they are above the law. 1245pm: Began the response to Janny about Thanksgiving....'Please Mr. Custer...I don't wanna go...' I basically said that I will not be attending, "hope ya'll ...

Mo 11/25/19

Mo 11/25/19 Up 710am: Sunny and temps to upper 50's. Watched, 'A LITTLE TRIP TO HEAVEN' (Amazon Prime) A couple living in a remote area of Minnesota scam an insurance company. The man kills a drifter in a staged car accident and tags the body with false ID. This allows the woman to claim the million dollar life insurance policy....The plan unravels; with Forest Whitaker, Julia Stiles, Jeremy Renner, and Peter Coyote. Not a bad Noir-ish thriller and filmed mostly in Iceland. Then watched, 'BEFORE THE SUN EXPLODES' (Amazon Prime) A married stand-up comic bombs at The Laugh Factory and goes home with a sexy and flirtatious comic. She claims to be bothered by a stalker, but she's stalking him. An open-ended finish, but very intriguing. No major stars, but nominated for awards at SXSW FILM FESTIVAL, 2016. 1240pm: Writing the Weekly Wrap then, PC 'Off' and reading CHAMELEON and listening to the living room Altec. Car was is still closed and on the mac...

Su 11/24/19

Su 11/24/19 Up 725am: Bright and sunny- temps to low 80's. Watched, 'BRITTANY RUNS A MARATHON' (Amazon Prime) It starts like it might just be corny and trite, but it evolves into less of a comedy, and more of a heart-warming drama with some jokes and witty asides thrown in. Then, the next two episodes of, 'JACK RYAN' (Amazon Prime). Action packed thrills in sleazy Venezuela.  ODD QUESTIONABLE FACT: This country has more minerals and oil than any place on earth....Is this true, and if so, why are the citizens starving? Corruption at The Top. 1215pm: Cutting a tree along the side of the backyard. I cut back most of the trees to the level of the fence and it looks....better than it did. Will work on it in the Spring. I sawed up the branches and put them on the piles in front. Then I did the Weekly Cleaning, and was on the machines at FitClub West by 2pm. 45" Octane (WTF- Patricia Arquette). 45" Walk (TV the rest of the workout). 45" Cross. 30...

Sa 11/23/19

Sa 11/23/19 Up 730am: Cloudy with some freezing drizzle- to 40. Watched Netflix disc, 'PULSE' (Screenplay by Wes Craven and filmed in Romania) A computer virus spreads through the internet and unleashes malevolent forces from another dimension. Special effects allow a fairly convincing level of fear and dread; Kristen Bell is fantastic. Then, 'DREAM/ KILLER' (Netflix Documentary) Ryan Ferguson is convicted of the 2001 murder of a reporter in the parking lot of the Columbia Daily Tribune in Columbia, MO, and Ryan's family fights for almost ten years before the ruling is overturned. Ferguson and a friend, both underage, were drinking on Halloween night near where the murder occurred. Two years later, the friend felt that they might have had a part in the killing, and although he couldn't remember anything from the night of the murder he was spoon-fed information by the police, and then intimidated into believing that they were killers.  This is a grave misca...

Fr 11/22/19

Fr 11/22/19 Up 635am: Mostly sunny with temps to about 40. *****Somebody has 'raked the roof' of the house next door. Also, it looks like a lot of branches have been collected in front of their garage. Watched, 'THE LAST BOY SCOUT' (Netflix) A very enjoyable 'Action/ Thriller/ Buddy Picture, yet almost too silly and violent to be believed; with Bruce Willis, Damon Wayans, and Halle Berry. I tried to watch this yesterday, but the problems at Netflix made this impossible. Clear sailing today. Sent emails to Janny and Cindy. The former about the 'Holiday Pecan Pie', and the latter about 'Dave's Condition'; "Hi gang, I got some news about Johnson today. He's not doing well at all. He can't get out of bed , falls a lot, often doesn't know who anyone is and can't even roll over. Donna sent me a picture so I could see him. I won't share that unless you want to see how he is. I feel the end is near for him. It's so ...

Th 11/21/19

Th 11/21/19 Up 650am: Overcast, drizzle, windy to 50's. ****Netflix was down, and I learned this on the contact page. I was going to watch 'THE LAST BOY SCOUT' (Netflix), but watched the first two episodes of 'JACK RYAN' Season 2 (Amazon Prime). Netflix was back by 9am. Listened to 'SWORDS' on the living room Altec and read 'CHAMELEON'. To the 'Y' and on the machines by 2pm. 45" Walk (Watching the Impeachment Hearings on the phone or on the TV all workout). 45" Recumbent Bike. 45" Cross. 30" Walk. 30" Cross. Home to read downstairs and listen to THE DANDY WARHOLS and then GOVERNMENT MULE on the downstairs speaker bar. Then in the tub with more Diehl and listened to CLUTCH and DAVID ALLEN COE. The next 'BREAKING BAD' (Netflix) ****The connection is SLOW!!! Are they throttling???? Way over 100 Mbps in the day and then bare 20 in peak hours. **** The speed came roaring back in less than an hour, ...

We 11/20/19- Contemporary Book Club at six

We 11/20/19- Contemporary Book Club at six Up 635am: Cloudy early, then sunny and to mid 50's. Listened to podcasts and interviews with author of 'WHISKEY WHEN WE'RE DRY', John Larison. After last night's Internet slow down I was curious to see what the speed was on the living room PC. Now I'm clocking in at between 100 and 118 Mbps!... Thank you Xfinity. Then watched, 'NOBODY'S FOOL' (Amazon Prime). An enchanting film about the life of a sixty year old loser in a small town in upstate New York; with Paul Newman, Jessica Tandy, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, and Philip Seymour Hoffman- from a novel by Richard Russo. 1115am: PC is 'Off' and skimming the novel for tonight's meeting. 130pm: On the machines at FitClub West. 45" Octane (Watched the Impeachment Hearings on the phone). 45" Walk (TV rest of workout). 45" Cross. 30" Walk. 30" Old Style Cross (Talked to Kim; she used to work at the phone company...

Tu 11/19/19

Tu 11/19/19 Up 635am: Overcast to upper 40's. Watched 'TWICE BORN' (Amazon Prime) A loony love story set against the backdrop of war-torn Sarajevo. A journalist and a photographer cannot have a child. They agree to use a surrogate, and as the man and woman begin to make love, soldiers attack the house and the woman is raped. The photographer hides, and after the child is born, the journalist flees to Italy with the baby and raises him as her son. The photographer dies (probably a suicide). All of this is revealed in the last twenty minutes, and the film is kind of a flashback as the woman comes back to Sarajevo with the teenage boy. Crazy dialog and implausible situations, but (if you don't think too hard) it's worth a look. Then, '16 BLOCKS' (Netflix) A dissolute cop must take a witness 16 blocks in lower Manhattan to court to testify against the police, but the crooked cops come gunning for them both; with Mos Def and Bruce Willis- Surprisingly good...

Mo 11/18/19

Mo 11/18/19 Up 7am: Overcast and mostly cloudy with temps just over 40. Watched 'ROSIE' (Hoopla) The film was a particularly harrowing look at a young Irish family who have been kicked out of their rental house and must find daily lodging in local hotels. Apparently they have a credit card from the city, but there are almost no places available for them to stay. At the start of the film it states that Ireland has the highest percentage of people living on the streets due to an abject shortage of affordable housing. The husband has a job, and the mother must get three children back and forth to school, watch one girl under school age, and try and find housing for the night. Shocking and depressing, yet all of the performances were top notch. Tried to call back Dr. Ellison's office on a missed call this morning. Still waiting and probably involves the results of the blood test that I took after the Wellness Visit. Then, 'CLARENCE CLEMONS: WHO DO I THINK I AM? An u...

Su 11/17/19

Su 11/17/19 Up 710am: Cloudy with a slight chance of rain- temps to mid 40's. Watched Netflix disc, 'COUNTRY STRONG'. A watchable film, yet loaded with every cliche and obvious choice in the 'Troubled Super-Star' genre. It comes off as a weak and melodramatic homage to 'A STAR IS BORN' that, despite a cringe worthy story-line, is saved (just barely) by some decent acting; with Gwyneth Paltrow, Garrett Hedlund, Tim McGraw, Leighton Meester (she looks so much like a young Julianne Moore that it was distracting), and a non-speaking role for Marshall Chapman. Then, 'WISE GIRLS' (Hoopla) A surprisingly good film! A young woman comes back to Staten Island after dropping out of medical school, and gets a job at a local Italian restaurant that happens to be run by the mafia. She becomes close friends with two of the waitresses, and when she witnesses a mob murder, the gang will not let her leave. But, one of her friends turns out to be working undercov...

Sa 11/16/19

Sa 11/16/19 Up 645am: Partly sunny- to low 40's. Watched 'THE PELICAN BRIEF' (Netflix) An excellent 'journalistic thriller' about the discovery of a plot that involves the assassination of two supreme court justices and collusion by the president of the United States to get a favorable ruling on a billion dollar oil deal: From the novel by John Grisham; with Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington, Sam Sheppard, John Heard, John Lithgow, and Robert Culp. Then, 'HIT & RUN' (Netflix) Am odd 'chase car movie' with interesting dialog, but more 'fun' than 'funny'. A guy is in witness protection in rural California decides to leave the program to take his wife to LA where bad guys await; with Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard, Tom Arnold, Bradley Cooper!!!, Jason Bateman, and Beau Bridges. Then watched several videos with Kristen and Dax. And a 25" YouTube video about how Kristen redesigned her sister's family home in suburban Detroit...

Fr 11/15/19- Wellness Exam: 1130am

Fr 11/15/19- Wellness Exam: 1130am Up 650am: Partly sunny to just over forty degrees. Watched, 'THE WAR ZONE' (Amazon Prime) A powerful and harrowing film about a father having sex with his teenage daughter. They live in a remote area of Devon, England and the sad film shows what happens when the teenage son finds out. Listening to the impeachment hearings on the computer at 91.9 FM , and off to the doctor at 11am. Everything was fine, but I don't see Ms. Fenner, but somebody else on Dec. 23rd. I had the last colonoscopy three years ago because they found a few polyps and my father had a history with colon cancer. He said that the workouts were fine and I might not need to take the Magnesium. I got a blood work done and they will call with the results. No Charge. I drove to the Walmart on South Sixth via the interstate and exchanged the Large for a Double Extra Large....I got the last one in the store and I would have bought more in that size if they had them. A...

Th 11/14/19

Th 11/14/19 Up 725am: Partly cloudy to overcast- to mid thirties. Watched '187' (Netflix) An unsettling movie about teaching and gang violence. At the end credits you're told that the film was written by a teacher, but the 'real' teacher did not engage in Russian Roulette or commit murder; with Samuel L. Jackson, Kelly Rowan, and John Heard. *******Paid the cards. Chatted with Xfinity about going 'Unlimited'. Last month's GB usage was $47, if I went unlimited it would cap at $45. Will watch the bill and if necessary, I'll take the plan. Then, 'GHOST WORLD' (Amazon Prime) A classic Black Comedy. The summer after high school, two girlfriends become involved with a middle-aged man who loves ragtime and blues music. The film is really about consumer culture and loneliness; with Steve Buscemi, Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, Brad Renfro (later died of a heroin overdose at twenty-five), Bob Balaban, Illeana Douglas, and Dave Sheridan as ...

We 11/13/19- Big Patch Tuesday Update

We 11/13/19- Big Patch Tuesday Update Up 645am: Partly sunny with temps almost to freezing. Watched 'TAKERS' (Netflix) An LA robbery crew takes out two bank trucks with $20 million. The plan is to blow up the street and then drop the trucks into an underground tunnel. An exacting heist film that's frenetic, over-the-top, messy, but really packs a punch; with Chris Brown, Idris Elba, and Matt Dillon. Then, 'OLD THIEVES: THE LEGEND OF ARTEGIOS' (Netflix). I gave it a shot, but just not worth it. A random and uninteresting collection of interviews with old thieves in Mexico is not worth my time. Then, 'THELONIOUS MONK: STRAIGHT NO CHASER' (Netflix) Mostly film of him playing, but some scenes of his weird interactions with friends and associates. Clearly he was suffering from some form of mental illness; Clint Eastwood- executive producer. 1215pm: Restart to complete the updates. Will hit the 'Y' later. Deposited the 'Elsie's House...

Tu 11/12/19

Tu 11/12/19 Up 725am: Bitterly cold; single digits early and high in the low twenties with plenty of sun. Watched, 'FALLEN' (Netflix) A star-studded case that creates a fairly decent Police Thriller/ Horror Flick from 1998. A murderer is put to death in the gas chamber and this man might be possessed by a demon. Then, the lead detective on the case is framed for murders that mirror the killings done by the condemned killer. However, it's really a fallen angel, Azazel, who is a spirit, but can take bodily form. He's kind of like a virus that is spread from human to human by touch. Not as dumb as it seems, and strangely compelling. During the film, I took a fifteen minute break and shoveled the front walk and a small portion of the driveway. The snow has frozen hard as concrete and not a single flake has thawed. Then I wrote a reply to Janny's email about how much she liked the Dean Koontz novel that I loaned her, and I told her about Buddy's visit to the ...

Mo 11/11/19- Buddy's Wellness Check: 220pm

Mo 11/11/19- Buddy's Wellness Check: 220pm Slept until 825am! Drizzle changing to snow by mid-morning. One to two inches could fall. Watched 'FIND ME' (Amazon Prime) Another fantastic Independent film. A young guy and a young woman are office friends. She disappears and leaves him a 'digital trail' to find her while on a trip through America's most scenic natural wonders; shot in Death Valley, Yosemite, and several other national parks. Wrote The Weekly Wrap, and then watched, 'GUN'- a six episode TV series on Amazon Prime presented by Robert Altman. It follows the lives of six people after they take possession of a 45 automatic handgun; a star-studded cast- first episode John Asher and Kathy Baker. 130pm: Killing time till we have to leave to the vet. It's snowing like mad (a couple of inches on the ground) and the temps have dropped dramatically- only in the low twenties and to the low teens tonight. I warmed up the car in the garage till...

Su 11/10/19

Su 11/10/19 Awoke in the chair at 230am, then another plate of food. Up 735am: Sunny to mid 50's, but snow is predicted for Monday with plunging temps through mid-week. Watched Netflix disc, 'A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT'. Very much reminded me of a Jim Jarmusch film or even David Lynch, and an homage to silent film- even though there is sparse dialog and a brilliant musical soundtrack. A strange Art House Iranian love story between a young man and a mysterious vampire. He first meets her while tripping on Ecstasy and dressed as Dracula; shot in very ominous black and white. The director, Ana Lily Amirpour also shot, 'THE BAD BATCH' which is another fine, off-beat film although completely different. Then, 'GOOD INTENTIONS' (Amazon Prime) Corny nonsense about small town life in rural Georgia. Woman robs her husband's store ('BEER TODAY, GONE TOMORROW') to allow her two young sons to go to college at a much later date, but she uses the mo...

Sa 11/9/19

Sa 11/9/19 Up 630am: Sunny, to low 50's. Watched Netflix disc, 'MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES'. Fun and silly- in the spirit of 'THE HANGOVER'; Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick, and Aubrey Plaza. Two brothers are forced to take dates to their younger sister's wedding in Hawaii. Then, 'COME AND FIND ME' (Netflix) A young man's girlfriend goes missing from their home in Los Angeles, and after searching for more than a year she returns, and he learns that she's some kind of deep undercover secret agent. A wild and crazy ride, and fairly well-done; with Aaron Paul and Annabelle Wallis. Watched several interviews and reviews of the movie on YouTube. 1245pm: Reading on the couch and listening to the living room Altec. Got up too early. Wabash PO and Planet Fitness later. On the couch cycling through Amazon Music, reading/ napping, and listening on the Altec speaker, and I added a whole bunch of albums to my Amazon Music. It's tr...

Fr 11/8/19- Green For Tire Pressure Light

Fr 11/8/19- Green For Tire Pressure Light Up 7am: Mostly sunny to mid 30's- Temps in teens early. Watched, 'AMERICAN HISTORY X' (Netflix). I listened to 'OFF CAMERA' with Edward Norton last week, and happy to see that the film just dropped to Netflix stream. Norton said that he was up for the movie 'THE RAINMAKER' with Matt Damon. He went to the director, Francis Ford Coppola, asked if he should take the role of another lawyer, and felt that the movie would be 'too square'. Coppola advised him to do 'AMERICAN HISTORY X'. When Norton's character is doing his racist rants he sounds just like some of the stuff that's coming out of the White House these days. Then watched, 'ASSIMILATE' (Netflix) A reworking of 'THE INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS'. ****Got an email from Janny and Joe that they want to stop by with some more paperwork dealing with the Worden Trust. I thought we'd finished with that, and I have to...

Th 11/7/19- Permanent Crown: 3pm

Th 11/7/19- Permanent Crown: 3pm Up 710am: Blustery, partly sunny, cold- highs in mid 30's. Watched 'MALL' (Amazon Prime) A young meth-head shoots his mother and burns down their trailer, and then goes on a shooting rampage at the neighborhood mall. Then several stories intertwine; a Haitian security guard who has lost his wife, a bored housewife looking for anonymous sex, and a pretentious college student who quotes Herman Hesse and has just taken Ecstasy. A jumble of a film, but not totally unwatchable, but almost; with Gina Gershon and Vincent D'Onofrio (he co-wrote the film from a novel by Eric Bogosian). Then, 'NEVER FOREVER' (Amazon Prime) A suburban American woman and her Korean husband cannot have a child, so she picks a young Korean living in the city to impregnate her. However, she falls in love with him; with Vera Farmiga in a joint US/Korean venture. Vera Farmiga was radiant! 115pm: PC 'Off' and reading and listening to the living roo...

We 11/6/19

We 11/6/19 Up 720am: A particularly vivid dream about 'standing in' at a performance of a band like 'The Association'. I was dressed like the band, and I was to lip-sync the lyrics, hold a guitar and pretend to play. They wanted me to do it, but I finally refused. I was so nervous that I couldn't speak. Mostly cloudy and temps to just above 50. Watched 'THE BRAVE ONE' (Netflix) A woman and her fiance are brutally mugged in Central Park. He dies, yet she lives and seems to try and get revenge on all of the city's wicked elements. She forms a relationship with the detective assigned to her case, and she finds that she can only continue live by acquiring a new and more hardened persona. It's a more thoughtful and emotional movie than the standard Charles Bronson genre film, but the ending is almost absurd; with Jody Foster and Terrance Howard. From the director of 'THE CRYING GAME', Neil Jordan. Then watched the last three episodes of Se...

Tu 11/5/19

Tu 11/5/19 Up 650am: Sunny, to about 50. Watched 'THE KING' (Netflix) Henry IV's son is a bit of a wastrel, but he takes the throne after the death of his father and wins the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. A well-acted, better than average film that mixes court intrigue and epic medieval battle scenes; with Ben Mendelsohn, Timothee Chalamet, Joel Edgerton (he co-wrote and produced and Brad Pitt was also a co-producer), and Lily-Rose Depp (Johnny Depp's daughter). ****Added all of 'THE CHEESE STANDS ALONE' from Dropbox to the Toshiba portable drive. I had needed to do this for ages, and it only took a few minutes. After the film culled some stuff from Dropbox. Then, 'BLUEBERRY NIGHTS' (Amazon Prime) A romantic film that kind of misses the mark by Hong Kong director, Wong Kar-Wai. A young woman in NYC is jilted by her lover and becomes friends with a man who runs the local all night diner. They both feel an attraction, but she inexplicably leaves a...

Mo 11/4/19

Make new document beginning Mo 11/4/19 Mo 11/4/19 Up 645am: Cloudy to mid 50's. Watched 'AMERICAN WOMAN' (Hoopla) A struggling blue collar woman is plagued by bad luck. Her sixteen year old daughter goes missing under mysterious circumstances and she must raise her grandson and flounder through a series of bad relationships with men. A truly harrowing movie; with Sienna Miller (she's terrific- her character changes and matures over an eleven year span), Christina Hendricks and Aaron Paul. Then, 'POWDER BLUE' (Amazon Prime) Four strangers lives are intertwined in dark and murky Los Angeles a few days before Christmas. Although it boasts a star-studded casts, this is one of the dumbest films that I've seen in ages..."solipsistic, overwrought only-in-L.A. projects"; with Jessica Biel, Eddie Redmayne, Forest Whitaker, Ray Liotta, Lisa Kudrow, and Patrick Swayze and Kris Kristofferson have very tiny roles. Wrote a rather long 'Weekly Wrap...

Su 11/3/19

Su 11/3/19 Up 720am (the new time): Had trouble sleeping and I read for over an hour, and I started the new book in the Harry Hole series. Partly sunny to upper 50's and breezy. Wrote up 'BODY SURFING' by Anita Shreve for the blog. Watched Netflix disc, 'ENOUGH SAID'. This is a perfect critique of the film: "___Enough Said is another tremendously well crafted, intelligent dramedy about people, with complicated lives, who make bad decisions trying to do the right thing____"; directed by Nicole Holofcener, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Toni Collette, Catherine Keener, and Ben Falcone. Then, watched, 'AMERICAN SON' (Netflix). At a Florida police station a woman is frantic with worry. In the early morning hours, she learns that her eighteen year old son has been entered into the system, no one will tell her his status and she is frantic with worry. The film is a harrowing tale about race, gender, class, and police procedure. Only...

Sa 11/2/19- Clocks Back

Sa 11/2/19 Up 730am: Bright, breezy, and sunny with temps to just about 50. Watched Netflix disc, 'KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES'. A fairly ridiculous bit of fluff that was barely amusing. A suburban couple suspect that their new neighbors on the cul-de-sac are secret agents; with Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher (she's Sacha Baron Cohen's wife!), Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot, and Patton Oswalt, and I'm embarrassed for all of them. Then, 'THE 51sT STATE (ESPANOL) (Amazon Prime) Another dumb Action/ Comedy, but this was the Spanish version, and not nearly worth the effort. I shut it down after five minutes. I settled on 'LOOKING FOR THE JACKALOPE' (Amazon Prime). Another very high quality small budget picture that really packed a punch. A 'blocked' novelist is invited to his 20 year college reunion hopes to rekindle the romance with 'the girl he left behind'. He misses his flight, and takes a train,  then a failed attempt at hitchhiking, a ride i...

Fr 11/1/19

Fr 11/1/19 Up 8am: Partly sunny to 50. Watched, 'MIDNIGHT COWBOY' (Amazon Prime) A fifty year old classic, and more than anything else, it's a film about loneliness; with John Voight and Dustin Hoffman. Harry Nillson's theme song for the movie is 100% perfect. Then I watched, 'NIGHT OWLS' (Amazon Prime) A one night stand turns into a suicide rescue. Just as the guy realizes he is in his boss's house, the girl that he has picked up takes an overdose of pills. They develop a relationship as he keeps her awake during the long night. This was a really fine film, and more like a very well written stage play. I loved it; with Adam Pally and Rosa Salazar. Watched a couple of YouTube videos about the film; with director, Charles Hood- Pally and Salazar are very funny people. 215pm: To the gas station with free air to fill up the tires. Idiot Light came on last night; 28 lbs. and I filled them to 31 lbs, but the light didn't go out. Will schedule an app...
