Mo 2/27/23 715am (B). 845am (1- SB). 1050am (1-SB). 2pm (2-B). 440pm (2-B). 720pm (2-B).  Up 540am: Heavy thunderstorms early, then overcast & very windy with temps to mid 50's. Watched 'ARMAGEDDON TIME' (Peacock-TV). A coming of age tale of the director's life (James Gray) as a 12 year old boy growing up in racially troubled Queens NY in 1980. Janny mentioned this film and I think she didn't like it. Family Values run amok, and are not very sympathetic to 'right-wingers' so I can see why it wouldn't be her cup of tea; with Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, Banks Repeta, Jaylin Webb, and Anthony Hopkins. It's not a civics lesson, but more of a memory piece about the director's life in racially conflicted Queens NY- 1980. Wrote 'The Chat' and included a ham-fisted review of 'ARMAGEDDON TIME' and 'DOPE'. Watched episode #3 of 'CRIME DIARIES: The Candidate' (Netflix). 1155am: PC is 'Off' and preparing for a f...

Su 2/26/23 725am (B). 1105am (1-SB). 1230pm (2-B). 430pm (2-B). 705pm (2-B).  Up 540am: Partly sunny with temps to mid 50's. Watched Netflix disc 'FUNNY PEOPLE'. Well written dialogue and an interesting premise made this film highly engaging. It concerns a rich and famous celebrity comedian who is told by his doctor that he's dying and has only months to live. He begins to change his life and then he learns that he's in remission. The film is chock full of today's famous comedians that appeared in the film when they were so, so young; with Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza, RZA, Aziz Ansari, and James Taylor.  Began season #2 of 'GANGLANDS' (Netflix). Watched 32 minutes of episode #1 and the plot is very dependent on last season's story, so it doesn't make much sense. 1150am: The PC is 'Off' and the plan is to do the weights and then walk downtown to mail back the disc.  Weights:...

Sa 2/25/23

Sa 2/25/23 805am (B). 1245pm (2-B). 7pm (2-B).  ***Last night was a very, very restless night's rest. I smoked a small bong to relax before I got into bed and my feet became so cold that it was preventing me from sleeping. I got up and rubbed muscle cream on both feet and bumped the electric blanket up to '8'. I still don't know what caused the unusually cold feeling in the extremities , but I couldn't fall asleep.  Up 705am: Partly cloudy with temps to mid 40's. Watched Netflix disc 'NOPE'. A UFO movie with a touch of horror. A remote horse ranch in the west is the scene of an extraterrestrial visitation. It's just a physical manifestation of pure HUNGER and blood will rain down! What a pleasant surprise. Yesterday evening I was surprised that Janny had seen this one and I couldn't get her to categorize it. Now I understand because this was certainly something very different and high marks for unrelenting dread; with Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer...

Fr 2/24/23- Fish Fry on Red Oak

Fr 2/24/23- Fist Fry on Red Oak at 5pm 710am (B). 10am (2-B). 430pm (2-B). 950pm (2-B).  Up 535am: Partly sunny with temps to upper 30's. Watched 'THE POST-TRUTH WORLD' (Netflix). A film from Taiwan about the murder of a young girl in the public restroom of a baseball stadium. Her boyfriend is tried and convicted for the killing, but he escapes and teams up with an on-line podcaster to find the real perpetrator. A wild and wooly plot and the killer is the grandmother of a food vendor who was present in the bathroom when the killing occurred. Maybe it was aimed specifically at Taiwanese audiences because it certainly did not make sense to this American. The film seemed to strain to be layered and intricate, but it just came across as dumb.  1005am: The PC is 'Off' and the plan is to get in 5 miles now and 2 miles later. I have to be at the Lake at 5pm for the fish fry.   1020am: FIVE MILES AT 4.0 PACE AND ZERO SLANT; began 'Protect Our Parks 7' on J.R.E.  R...

Th 2/23/23- Dentist 1pm

Th 2/23/23- Dentist 1pm 7am(B). 920am (2-B). 445pm (2-B). 7pm (2-B).  Up 530am: Partly cloudy, breezy and temps to mid 40's. Watched 'THE STRAYS' (Netflix). A wealthy and mixed race English woman has concealed from her family the fact that she abandoned her two other children when they were babies. Almost two decades later the two Black children come back to terrorize their mother and her new family, and then Mom leaves everyone...again.  'You can never get away from the fact, if you are not White, you are considered Black'. This film was edgy, but didn't go far enough so I'd only give it a 'B' Minus or a 'C' Plus. It's still 'worth a look' because it did offer tonal elements of the Horror/ Slasher Genre for a unique perspective on Race & Class.  Watched a YouTube explanation of the film. I didn't learn anything new and his interpretation was the same as mine. 'A portrait of a selfish woman who yearned for a better li...

We 2/22/23 650am (B). 9am (1-SB). 1005am (1-SB). 240pm (2-B)- new 1/8th. 450pm (2-B). 710pm (B).  Up 515am: A rainy day with temps to about 60.  Watched 'TAR' (Peacock-TV). A brilliant film. It makes you feel like you have gained IQ points after watching the movie.  It's the story of a female symphony conductor at the top of her career, but she's losing it. Her greed and ruthlessness begin to eclipse her genius; with Cate Blanchett, Nina Hoss, and Mark Strong (during the film I thought I was watching Stanley Tucci). '92' Metascore (it got six '100' scores among the critics); Nominated for 6 Oscars; 59 wins & 238 nominations total. Began 'YELLOWSTONE' (Peacock-TV). Two cultures clash in scenic Montana. The speculators, in the name of progress, want to develop the land and the landowners want to conserve what they have. Shut it down one hour and 11 minutes into episode #1. This is the best American series that I've seen in a long time. ...

Tu 2/21/23- Buddy Sick

Tu 2/21/23- Buddy Sick 725am (B). 1030am (1-SB). 2pm (1-SB). 440pm (2-B). 710pm (B).  Up 6am: Mostly sunny with temps to upper 40's. Rain and warmer temperatures for tomorrow. ***Buddy ate all of his breakfast and then threw it all up around 630am. A little more at 720am and he wolfed it down. He's back to normal.  Watched 'THE WOMB' (Netflix). A young woman from the slums agrees to move in with a mysterious elderly couple during her pregnancy and then let them adopt her child. The old couple have an adult son and he is cursed to suffer a deadly accident every ten years unless a mother and her newborn baby are murdered in his place.  The son, the woman, and her newborn escape, but the man is run over and killed because the curse of ' Wednesday' was real because he didn't make it a day past the ten year mark. Filmed in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. It was kind of like a foreign and strange 'ROSEMARY'S BABY'.  I liked it.  I began the first episode ...

Mo 2/20/23 715am (B). 1010am (2-B). 120pm (2-B). 435pm (2-B). 705pm (2-B).  Up 530am: Mostly sunny with temps to mid 50's. Watched 'SHE SAID' (Peacock-TV). A fantastic film that deals with the Harvey Weinstein case, but it's really about how the process of contemporary journalism works. It emphasizes the fact that news reporting must be the relentless pursuit of verifiable facts and individuals and institutions must be confronted regardless of their power in society. There are few excellent films that portray realistic depictions of the Fourth Estate (ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, SPOTLIGHT, SHATTERED GLASS) and 'SHE SAID' belong in that group; with Zoe Kazan, Carey Mulligan, and Patricia Clarkson. I really liked this film.  It feels like a 'Two Movie Morning' so I'm going to rewatch 'SLIDING DOORS' (Peacock-TV). I thought that it would be a 'rewatch', but I was completely unfamiliar with this film and it was really a 'first time...

Su 2/19/23

Su 2/19/23 725am (2-B). 1110am (2-B). 435pm (2-B). 705pm (2-B).  Up 6am: Bright & sunny with temps to mid 50's. This is late February? Did the Weekly Cleaning Watched 'THE GRAY MAN' (Netflix).  I had seen this one before and it was worth a second viewing. Clever banter and fast-paced action, a ton of special effects, and lots of 'boom-boom' make it more than tolerable.  Chris Evans portrayal of a psychotic and unhinged private intelligence operative was truly memorable and as soon as I saw his character my memory clicked in. Chris Evans is widely known for his roles in the 'Avenger' movies and this is why he was unfamiliar to me because I generally do not watch movies based on comic books and this is why I didn't recognize this internationally famous actor; with Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, and Shea Whigham. Over 14 minutes of closing credits! The film is based on the novels in the 'Gray Man' se...

Then downtown to the pot shop. No customers, but fifteen staff. I asked if there was a problem with failed pickups, but they said that wasn't an issue.  ***$225: 7 g/ 7g/ 14 g. Home by 8am Watched Netflix disc 'OLD HENRY'. The film is set in the Oklahoma territories of 1906 and concerns an old sodbuster and his teenage son who become tangled up with a gang of bank robbers posing as lawmen. 'Old Henry' is actually Billy The Kid and this is news to everyone, including his teenage son. Tim Blake Nelson delivered a superb performance and he was also an executive producer; "69 Metascore", 3 wins and 1 nominations.  More 'HACHE' (Netflix). Finished episode #5. 1145am: PC is 'Off' and preparing to walk do...

Fr 2/17/23 740am (2-B). 915am (1-SB). 1030am (1-B). 140pm (1-B).  445pm (2-B). 710pm (2-B).  Up 615am: Partly sunny with temps to about 32.  ***Apparently I got both Netflix discs late yesterday afternoon, but I didn't realize that until this morning. Watched Netflix disc 'CITY OF LIES'. The film deals with the unsolved murder of Biggie Small (Christopher Wallace). In the late 90's there was a violent rivalry between the kings of West Coast Rap and the kings of East Coast Rap. Tupac headed the west coast rap style and Biggie ran the east coast scene. The film alleges that Suge Knight was behind the murder of Small but so many LAPD officers were employed by Knight's organizations that the evidence implicating Knight was ignored by LA investigators. This omission could give Biggie Smalls family enough evidence of malfeasance to bring suit and bankrupt the city of Los Angeles. Not a great film, but well worth a look; with Johnny Depp, Forest Whitaker, Toby Huss, and S...

Th 2/16/23 730am (B).  840am (1-SB). 1015am (1-SB). 1245pm (1-B). 215pm (1/2-B). 435pm (2-B). 7pm (2-B).   Up 610am:  Overcast &  breezy with misty rain/ (maybe) wintry mix with temps to about 40. I settled on watching 'HERE ARE THE YOUNG MEN' (Peacock-TV),  however the picture didn't allow you to see the lower half of the subtitles so I took a (wild) chance on the first 'featured' pick at Netflix. '2 GUNS' (Netflix).  A fine addition to the 'Buddy/ Cop' genre. A couple of bank robbers are actually undercover DEA and US NAVY agents, but neither is aware that the other one is working for the authorities.  They  collaborate on a plan to steal two million in a bank heist yet they actually get away with $143,000. It was a secret CIA account. Silly premise, but clever dialogue kept it entertaining; with Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, Edward James Olmos, and Fred Ward. Watched 'DUCK SEASON' (Netflix). An intriguing...

We 2/15/23 715am (B). 835am (1-SB). 935am (1-SB). 1130am (2-B). [1/2 hit in the Esporta parking lot before workout]. 445pm (2-B). 650pm (2-B).  Up 550am: Partly sunny with temps to about 50. Watched 'NARVIK' (Netflix). This was better than I expected and was the story of Hitler's first loss to the Allies near the beginning of WWII. The town of Narvik, Norway was a port city and essential to getting iron ore to Germany for the war effort. The plot involves a woman who has a young son that needs a doctor and she is denied by the Germans. In desperation, she says that she will give up the location of important English officials if they save her son. They do and the son lives, but she was branded a collaborator while her husband nearly died in the fighting to drive the Germans back to Sweden. This fictionalized part of the story (the land and sea battles were reasonably correct) about people caught in the social and political nightmare of living in an enemy occupied country was...

Tu 2/14/23 650am (B). 925am (2-B). 205pm (2-B). 445pm (2-B). 710pm (2-B).  Up 515am: Light rain and showers beginning early this evening with temps to the mid 50's & very windy.  Watched 'CRIMES OF THE FUTURE' (Kanopy). The film's outrageous premise is that the human race's next evolutionary leap will be the ability to eat plastic... "They're evolving away from the human path and that cannot be allowed to continue". The film boasts an unbelievably imaginative set design and the mechanical contraptions are positively visionary. The plot is intentionally enigmatic, but the dialogue is clever and quirky; with Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart. Directed by David Cronenberg- 6 wins & 23 nominations. Watched 'MARGOT AT THE WEDDING' (Kanopy).  A peek into an eccentric and dysfunctional extended family on the eve of a sister's wedding to a man that 'she's only known for a year'; with Nicole Kidman, Jack Black, Je...

Decrease volume- tap Left earbud three times Up 550am: Bright & sunny with temps to mid 50's. Highly unusual for mid February. I dropped the ashtray downstairs before hitting the bong. Vacuum required. Watched 'THE SUBSTITUTE' (Netflix). A writer and critic takes a substitute teaching job in a poor section of Buenos Aires, Argentina and, after a rough start, becomes an inspiration for the young ones. It's filled with usual 'teacher as mentor' cliches, but the redeeming quality is the location- Avellaneda, Buenos Aires.  I wrote The Chat and then spent some time with the new earbuds. I should have removed the 'tape' from the electrical connections of the buds, but it looks like they charged OK. The pairing was nothing. Just turn on the phone and the connectivity is almost automatic. I decided to save t...

I wrote up 'STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND' by Robert Heinlein for the blog. ***While on the charger the phone alarm went off at 7am (I was downstairs sparkin'). The alarm setting had changed to 'everyday at 7am'. Obviously, I didn't do it and I wonder if a new phone is in my immediate future.  ***I cut a couple inches off the back of my hair and it's so long that maybe I'll visit the salon on Monroe. Watched the Netflix disc 'PEARL'. A delightful film because it's very funny and horrifying simultaneously. Set during the Pandemic of 1918 ('Spit Spreads Death') and the end of WWI; with Mia Goth, David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro... An affluent Danish man's mistress demands that he leave his wife. But his wife will turn him into the police for business fraud if he even tries to divorce. So, the man decides to run his wife over when she takes her evening run. However, he runs over (twice!) the wrong woman! It's a wild tale and I'll bet that there will be an English remake of this one. I really liked it. Filmed and set in and around scenic Funen, Denmark.  ***This morning a tree cutting service was working on the big tree down the street on the other side at the older single woman's house. Sometime in the future this area will be known as 'The Stumps' instead of 'The Oaks'.    ***They only trimmed the tree and the difference is barely discernible. Th 2/9/23- Treadmill Repair  705am (B). 1150am (2-B). 230pm (2-B). 435pm (2-B). 705pm (2-B).  Up 540am: Cloudy, raw, and blustery with temps to 40's. Watched 'INFIESTO' (Netflix). A Spanish film that is set during the opening days of the pandemic, circa 2019. It's a crazy tale of what is initially believed to be a child sex trafficking ring, but evolves into the discovery of a ritualistic Satan worshiping death cult. Some of the banter was so over the top that it was hilarious, but bonus points for the intense conviction. *** 905m: I got a call from Tony just as I began eating the rice and with only 9 minutes left on the film. I told him that 'this morning would be ideal'.   915am- 940am:  New lower PC board & tightened belt; $75. Watched 'RECURRENCE' (Netflix). {Also known as 'PIPA'}. A bland Argentinian film about a 'disgraced' female cop who gets involved with a couple of murders that highlight the differences (by custom and by law) between the rich and the local indigenous people. Corny to the max and I gave it a 'thumbs down' on Netflix and the only redeeming quality is that it was shot in the beautiful mountainous areas near La Quebrada, Argentina- a small town west of Bueno Aires.  1020am : The PC is 'Off' and the plan is to hit Esporta early.  Tu 2/7/23- Treadmill Repair? 720am (B).  10am (2-B). 1225pm (2-B). 445pm (2-B). 705pm (2-B).  Up 6am: Partly sunny with temps to about 50. Continued 'VENDETTA: Truth, Lies, and The Mafia' (Netflix). I hadn't expected to finish this series this morning, but only the final segment remains so what the heck. The 'hero' is sentenced to a year for 'defamation of character', but he was acquitted of all extortion charges. The female judge was convicted of all charges of corruption. As the credits roll, we learn that in Italy nobody does time in jail until the appeals have been resolved, so it's anybody's guess as to the actual final verdict. Many of the recent Spanish documentary series really do a superb job of presenting all sides of the story. American documentaries seem to always have a particular bias in that the bad guys are without redemption, and the good guys are beyond reproach.   Tony said that he would be here around 9am, but since he was six ho...

Watched 'DEVIL TO PAY' (Netflix). The film is a 'timeless' tale of life deep in the Appalachians where strict adherence to 'The Creed' is all that matters. It's hard to believe that anyone could be this far removed from contemporary culture, but that's part of the tone. It feels like a fable, except for the part about a black woman having this much power in rural Georgia. That's more like fantasy. Filmed near Hiawassee and Blairsville, Georgia in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest and the Nantahala National Forest. The locale is near the northern border of Georgia and Tennessee. Sent a brief 'Chat' to Pensacola, Florida. Finished 'THE SNOW GIRL' (Netflix). In the last scene the title is explained. The female reporter has written a book about the ...

Up 605am: Bright and sunny with temps to just above 50. Did the Weekly Cleaning and then watched the Netflix disc 'THE CHILDREN ACT'. A powerful and moving drama about a female British judge who adjudicates a Jehovah's Witness legal case in which a seventeen year old boy decides to refuse a blood transfusion because it's 'against the will of God'. The judge rules that the state must intercede to save the boy's life, and soon after the procedure the boy seems to flourish. Then, when the cancer returns he refuses more transfusions and dies. However, I fed him the Friskies about 520am and he gobbled it right down and even ate the crunchies. He seems in fine shape and he was resting right behind me while I worked at the PC.  Watched 'OUT OF LIFE' (Netflix). A French war photographer is kidnapped by fighters in Beirut, Lebanon and the film highlights the psychological deterioration of his character. The terror is unrelenting as he desperately clings to sanity. This film is real and compelling and nothing at all like a 'Hollywood' film.  ***845am: I got a call from Tony, Body Quest repair guy, saying that he's having car trouble and has to get a new battery, but he's still coming over today... Actually, he just sets up rich people and sends them to bars and restaurants where he takes a cut of what they spend. It's a convoluted and 'noir-ish' plotline, but he ends up murdered (by his girlfriend's mother) and the community chooses to believe that he was a 'good man'. This would be a hit at a film festival and I really enjoyed the film. Set in East Amman, Jordan. Wrote a reply to Janny's birthday wishes. I told her about the card that all of Jamie's family signed. It took two episodes to really get into this one, but after that it was very a compelling True Crime tale. Corruption, greed, and racism were important facets of the case and it's surprising that a kid falling into a canal after a hard night of partying would morph into one of the most complicated cases in Colombian history. This same production outfit has covered a Mexican presidential candidate's assassination and I've that one in the queue.  Called County Market Pharmacy and the prescription was not ready.
