Su 3/30/25

Su 3/30/25 815am (1-LB: Panama Punch). 1045am (1/2-LB: Permanent Marker). 105pm (1-LB:  Permanent Marker). 540pm (1-LB:  Permanent Marker). 820pm (1-LB: Panama Punch).  Up 630am: Chance of random showers this morning with highs in the upper 60's and temps falling.  By afternoon the forecast was for windy conditions and no rain. {We missed severe storms once again. Last night the weather radar looked very grim for us this afternoon, but now 'just rain'...and that didn't even happen}.  The tulip tree in the back is now in full bloom, but the wind and rains will have all the petals in the dirt in no time at all.  Weekly Cleaning Watched 'LITTLE SIBERIA' (Netflix). A meteor falls in a secluded Finnish village and the locals think that tourists will flock to the town and their economy will boom. And, the town's pastor finds out that his wife is pregnant, but 'his sperm don't swim'.  The film was shot in Nurmes, Finland, but it is called 'Hurmevaa...

Sa 3/29/25 845am (1-LB: Panama Punch). 1055am (1 hit-B: Permanent Marker). 1225pm (1-LB: Panama Punch). 535pm (1-LB: Permanent Marker). 815pm (1-LB: Panama Punch).  Up 735am (?!?). Cloudy & breezy with random showers and temps to upper 60's.  When I logged on I had to restart & it only took a couple of minutes.  Watched 'DANCING ON THE EDGE OF VOLCANO' (Kanopy). A compelling documentary about the making of the film, 'COSTA BRAVA, LEBANON'. They were in pre-production when the massive accidental explosion occurred in the harbor of Beirut, Lebanon on August 4th,  2020. Wikipedia: "It was one of the largest artificial non-nuclear explosions ever recorded"."...the sixth-largest accidental artificial non-nuclear explosion in human history". 'COSTA BRAVA, LEBANON' is on Netflix and I vaguely remember seeing the film but I had no idea that the production was so difficult. The filmmakers had to deal with the legal restrictions that were ...

Fr 3/28/25 715am (1-LB: Permanent Marker). 10am (1 hit-B: Panama Punch). 1215pm (1-LB: Panama Punch)  535pm (1-LB:  Permanent Marker). 815pm (1-LB: Panama Punch). Up 6am: A mix of sun & clouds with temps almost to 80! A 'wind advisory' is in effect with potential gusts to 40 mph this afternoon. Watched 'SUITABLE FLESH' (Hoopla). A silly film about a female shrink who is visited by a young man who claims that his father is trying to 'steal his body'. However, it was only a 'demon' looking for another host.  Buckets of blood and sexy situations can't make up for a witless storyline. The film claims to be based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft, although the connection is barely discernible; with Heather Graham, Judah Lewis, Bruce Davison, Barbara Crampton. "64" Metascore and that's about where I'd put it.     I spent fifteen minutes getting the calendar in order. I got a new dental appointment so that it didn't conflict with...

Th 3/27/25

Th 3/27/25 755am (1-LB: Permanent Punch). 1005am (1 hit-B: Permanent Marker).  1240pm (1-LB: Permanent Marker). 540pm (1-LB:  Permanent Marker). Up 710am: {Well Rested}. Periods of rain, breezy and temps to upper 50's. [No rain whatsoever] Finished 'HORIZON' (Netflix). The film was not as 'bland & predictable' as I thought it would be. However, it was obviously a project that was meant to be a series and the film only feels like a fragment of the whole. Lots of interesting characters and situations, but it was spread a little too thin and seemed half-baked.  Finished 'SNOW GIRL' (Netflix). The ending was less than satisfying, but left it wide open for another season. Miren goes missing after being stabbed by Nacho on the beach. The last scene shows a SWAT team enter a hidden room with many shelves of files connected to 'The Slide'. This group kidnaps people, forces them to perform violent sex acts and then sells the footage.  Noon: PC is 'Of...

We 3/26/25 720am (1-LB: Panama Punch). 1025am (1 hit- B: Permanent Marker). 1215pm (Permanent Marker). 535pm (1-LB: Panama Punch). 815pm (1-LB: Permanent Marker).  Up 615am: A mix of sun & clouds with temps to low 60's.  Watched 'POOR THINGS' (Amazon Prime). The film is a variation on the theme of Frankenstein; only this reanimation is female and she experiences a bizarre and profound sexual awakening. And most importantly, this 'new creature' cannot abide the constricting limitations of male and female sexual roles. The Plot:  A prominent surgeon finds a drowned pregnant woman right after she has attempted suicide by jumping off a bridge. He removes her brain and substitutes the baby's brain and 'reanimation' is a success. The doctor assumes complete responsibility to 'raise' his creation to maturity, but once she hits puberty mayhem ensues; with Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef. Directed by Yorgos Lanthinmos and based o...

Tu 3/25/25- Treadmill Down

Tu 3/25/25- Treadmill Down  655am (1-LB: Sativa Shake). 925am (1-LB: Permanent Marker).  1245pm (1-LB:  Panama Punch). 540pm (1-LB:  Permanent Marker). 820am (1-LB: Panama Punch). Up 530am: Mostly cloudy with temps to upper 50's.  Watched 'PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN' (Amazon Prime). {The title refers to a judge who gave a very light sentence to a man convicted of sexual assault. The judge did this because, "he seemed like such a promising young man"].  A woman acts as if she is very drunk in a singles bar and willingly leaves with men to see who will take advantage of her.  They all do. Isn't there a degree of 'Entrapment' involved? Thought provoking, but a less than satisfying ending; with Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Jennifer Coolidge. Won 1 Oscar; 118 wins & 201 nominations. "72" Metascore and I would boost it slightly higher to "83".   Finished 'THE LAST NIGHT AT TREMORE BEACH' (Netflix). Alex...

Mo 3/24/25- Springfield Clinic Call 705am (1-LB: Sativa Shake). 825am (1 hit-B: Permanent Marker).  1230pm (1-LB:  Panama Punch). 540pm (1-LB:  Permanent Marker). 815pm (1-LB: Panama Punch).  Up 6am: Mostly sunny with temps to upper 50's.  Watched 'REVELATIONS' (Netflix).  It's definitely overwrought, and more than a little corny, but I thought it was somewhat interesting. A Christian pastor in South Korea thinks that he's killed the man that kidnapped his son. Then he learns that his son was fine yet his morally questionable actions inexorably cause him to do evil. This is the second recent Korean film that casts the villain as a Christian leader. Christianity is a popular religion in Korea, but even in the states, I don't think that they could cast a Christian leader in such a negative light.    I got a call from Springfield Clinic about the MRI test. It's 130pm on Thursday, April 3rd on 350 West Carpenter. "Are you allergic to Contrast?'... Wha...

Su 3/23/25 805am (1-LB: Sativa Shake). 910am (1/2- LB: Cookie Bread). 1045am (1 hit-LB: Cookie Bread). 1pm (1-LB:  Sativa Shake). 540pm (1-LB:  Sativa Shake). 820pm (1-LB: Sativa Shake).  Up 535am: Light to heavy showers through this afternoon with temps to upper 50's. {Apparently all of the rain has blown by and complete clearing by 930am and not so much as a mist and heavy rain was predicted] Weekly Cleaning Watched 'OMNI LOOP' (Hoopla). It's another (aren't they all?)  slightly muddled 'Time Travel' genre film. A woman learns that she is dying 'from a black hole in the center of her chest' and she takes a magical (?) pill that allows her to go back one week in time. Whatever she does in that 'past' can affect her future. And she does this again and again until she can gain more time, but actually she's looking for more quality time...I guess...I didn't really understand the film's 'message' or even if there was one; wi...

Sa 3/22/35- Gummy: 100 mg

Sa 3/22/25- Gummy: 100 mg 710am (1-LB: Cookie Bread). {710am- I took 1/2 'DAY DRIFT' gummy 100 mg: 50 mg total}. 845am (1-LB: Cookie Bread). 1240pm (1-LB:  Sativa Shake).  [1235pm- I took 1/2 'DAY DRIFT' gummy  100 mg: 100 mg total today]. 540pm (1-LB:  Cookie Bread). 815pm (1-LB: Sativa Shake).  Up 6am: Partly sunny & breezy with temps to mid 50's. Wrote up 'GONE GIRL' by Gillian Flynn for the blog.  Watched 'FAREWELL, MR. HAFFMANN' (Kanopy). Just after the Nazi occupation of Paris a Jewish jewelry store owner signs over his shop to his gentile assistant. After the war they will square up. In the end almost nothing about the plan goes as predicted. This was basically a three character play with captivating dialogue and a great story. It's sort of a reworking of 'The Gift Of The Magi' by O. Henry; with Daniel Auteuil, Gilles Lellouche, Sara Giraudeau.    Finished 'BLACK MIRROR' (Netflix- 30 mins of  'Nosedive' from se...

Fr 3/21/25- Springfield Clinic Call 640am (1-LB: Cookie Bread). 735am (1/2-LB: Cookie Bread). 10am (1/2-LB: Guavadew). 1250pm (1-LB:  Guavadew). 435pm (1/2-LB: COOKIE BREAD). 535pm (1-LB: Guavadew). 815pm (1-LB: Guavadew).  Up 540am: Cloudy & blustery windy with temps to low 60's.   Watched 'A SEPARATION' (Kanopy). A very clever tale of a multifaceted and thorny moral dilemma. A man pushes a woman out of his apartment. He had hired her to tend his house and watch his senile father. One day he returns to his apartment and learns that she had left the apartment and tied the old man to his bed. She maintains that the 'push out of the apartment' caused her to have a miscarrieage. Each person has a unique point of view and their conflicting testimonies describe a huge 'gray area' of what might or might not be the truth. The judicial system seemed entirely foreign. It seemed almost too easy to file a formal complaint and extremely odd that not a single lawyer...

Watched 'COMPETENCIA OFICIAL' (Netflix). {Translation "Official Competition}. It is an exquisitely shot and very clever satire on the pretensions of the movie industry. An elderly CEO of a pharmaceutical company wants to create something that will forever be connected to his name. He decides to fund 'the greatest movie ever made'. The film consists of two male super-stars and a female director as they create 'Art'. Ex. Director shreds all of their awards in a 'wood chipper' (?) while the two actors are Saran wrapped together; Endless retakes of 'Good Evening' to convey the correct meaning; Director watches hundreds of headshots to find 'extras'; 'Look at that old lesbian'...'Oh, that's...

At noon a Tornado Watch was issued until 9pm, but the radar map is not nearly as lethal as it looked last weekend.  Watched 'THE IDES OF MARCH' (Amazon Prime).  A film about the slimy nature of American politics that tries to demonstrate how far we have sunk. Winning is the only goal and morality and ethics are out the window. Loyalty to the candidate is now worth far more than any moral principle. The film's message is kind of dated since sex with a young and attractive intern would probably not end a political career in the Trump Era. The level of accountability for a candidate in contemporary America is so low that it's comical; with Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, ...

Tu 3/18/25- Taxes 1pm/  Gummy  820am (1-LB: Cookie Bread). 1050am (1-LB: Cookie Bread).*** 345pm (1-LB:  Cookie Bread & I took 1/2 'DAY DRIFT': 50mg).*** 535pm (1-LB: Cookie Bread). 820pm (1-LB: Cookie Bread).  Up 6am: A mix of sun & clouds with temps to upper 70's and breezy. 630am: FIVE MILES TO 4.1 PACE AND ZERO SLANT; TUESDAYS WITH STORIES. No Weights. Watched 'NICE GUYS' (Netflix). I had seen it before but it was well worth a second look. Two wisecracking LA private detectives team up to find a 'porn film with an ecological message'; with Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Kim Basinger. The movie is set in Los Angeles of 1977 although much of it was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia. However, there were lots of shots at The Comedy Store. 9 wins & 34 nominations. "70" Metascore and I would put it at "86". Gosling & Crowe were great together.  Placed another order for rice at Amazon: $10  Finished  'OMNISCIENT' (Netflix). N...

Mo 3/17/25 740am (1-LB: Guavadew). 1250pm (1-LB:  Cookie Bread)  535pm (1-LB:  Cookie Bread). 815pm (1-LB" Gravadew).  Up 640am: Sunny and breezy with temps to low 60's.  Watched 'YOU'LL NEVER FIND ME' (Hoopla).  An Australian man is alone in his trailer during a violent thunderstorm when a young woman knocks on his door to seek shelter.  He invites her in and they exchange profundities and he (they?) begin to hallucinate or experience different perspectives on reality. I was confused. Who was the scarier of the pair? I guess this question is the theme of the film. I watched a YouTube video review and it seems that the guy really is a serial killer and during his encounter with the woman he is overcome by madness, guilt, and paranoia. In the end he seems to have taken some of his own 'knockout liquid' and collapses in his mobile home. And, I guess, that's where the film's title comes in. They will never find him. The movie has some very good line...

Su 3/16/25 810am (1-LB: Guavadew). 920am (1-LB: Cookie Bread). 120pm (1-LB:  Guavadew). 3pm (1-LB:  Guavadew). 440pm (1 hit- B: Cookie Bread). 535pm (1-LB:  Cookie Bread). 815pm (1-LB: Guavadew).  Up 640am: Cloudy, breezy and snow showers early with temps to low 40's. When I got up there was a light dusting of snow on the roofs and lawns. Weekly Cleaning I noticed that another house is for sale on Westview. It's listed for $175,000 and the online real estate photos include stacks of laundry and generalized clutter. Also, areas of unpainted wallboard show the start of a fairly comprehensive renovation and the ad says that the home is priced 'as is'. This house was on the market when I bought 940 and I think it was the house with the indoor hot tub.   Finished 'JUST ONE LOOK' (Netflix).  All the loose ends are tied and a very complicated series ends on an ironic note. The heroine who was looking for her missing husband was the one who took the phot...

Sa 3/15/25 745am (1-LB: Guavadew). 835am (1-LB: Cookie Bread). 1230pm (1-LB:  Guavadew). 540pm (1-LB:  Cookie Bread). 815pm (1-LB: Guavadew). Up 630am: Cloudy and windy with temps to just over 60. Last night we only got an inch and a half of rain and no further storm damage. {Not including the big branch that fell at 'the abandoned house' Friday afternoon}. I went to sleep with my wallet, checkbook, and keys on the headboard of the bed. Several tornadoes spiraled through Missouri and thousands are without power.  Prepared Guavadew and Cookie Bread for a psychedelic change of pace. Watched 'MIDNIGHT IN THE SWITCHGRASS' (Netflix). A badly written tale of a truck driver who is abducting young women along Interstate 10 between Texas and Florida. Despite his yen for domination, control, and murder, he also happens to be a devoted Christian family man. None of the characters or their situations were the slightest bit believable; Emile Hirsh, Megan Fox, Bruce Willis, Lukas Haa...

A 'wind advisory' and the threat of very strong storms for tonight. Only one more reason to ramp up the anxiety and I still haven't gotten the call from Fenner's office about the test results. {No call...Welcome To The Weekend} Watched 'THE BEAST' (Kanopy).  Unbelievable! Another film about 'love through the ages' via a 'time travel' genre film.  The film concerns a woman in the mid 21st century who 'transports' back to previous incarnations in the 19th century. She was 'an accomplished pianist who owns a doll factory' (none of this might be true) and is having her DNA 'purified' so that all of her negative influences will be eliminated. It als...

A very strange, yet ambitious film that attempts a literal presentation of 'Unrequited Love Through The Ages' via a 'Time Travel' genre picture. It doesn't really work, but what a big swing. Alice Lowe wrote, starred, and directed the movie. "72" Metascore and that's pretty much where I'd put it. Filmed on location in Cardiff and Brecon, Wales. From 'Empire': "Timestalker lacks a little humour and insight into obsessive love to make it truly sing, but it’s an admirably ...

We 3/12/25-Gummy: 50 mg 735am (1-LB: Permanent Marker). 1015am (1/2-LB: Permanent Marker). 1225pm [I took 1/2 of a 100mg 'DAY DRIFT' Sativa:  50mg total. 1225pm (1-LB:  Permanent Marker). 435pm (1-LB: Permanent Marker). 535pm (1-LB:  Permanent Marker). 815pm (1-LBL Permanent Marker).   Up 630am: A mix of sun & clouds and temps to about 70. Watched 'TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA' (Amazon Prime; 1985). It's set in a sleazy and more commercial side of Los Angeles that is as far from the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown as you can get.  A rogue detective and his new partner try to take out a master counterfeiter and things don't go as planned. Lots of zany foot chases and wild stunts with cars. The most notable is a long scene in which cars drive the wrong way on a crowded section of the LA freeway. And, watching bowlegged William Petersen sprint after bad guys while wearing cowboy boots is always a treat; with William Petersen, Willem Dafoe, John Pankow, John Turtu...

Paid the card Watched 'TRAP' (Netflix). Authorities learn that a serial killer will be attending an arena concert by superstar, Lady Raven. The killer and his daughter show up and he slowly realizes that the cops are on to him and he is caught in a 'trap'. Almost nothing in the film is the slightest bit believable and the initial premise is even flawed. Police could trick a suspect with a well planned 'sting', but it would never work for a stadium concert with thousands of people and almost infinite access.  And the fact that the killer's daughter would later be asked to be part of the show was completely beyond the realm of possibility. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan; with Josh Hartnett and Saleka Shyamalan ...

Spring Has Sprung.  Added 'A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE' by Nelson Algren and 'THE LATHE OF HEAVEN' by Ursula K. Le Guin to the blog.  Watched 'TO CATCH A KILLER' (Netflix). It begins at a massive downtown Baltimore fireworks display on New Year's Eve Night. A serial killer uses th0e cover of fireworks to shoot almost thirty individuals who were at their windows watching the show in the sky. A young female detective is asked by a veteran of the force to help. They crack the case and learn that the killer was a 'home-grown' terrorist with legitimate beef with the system; with Ben Mendelsohn, Shailene Woodley (she had a 'producer' credit also). If you suspend complete belief, it works. I thoug...

Su 3/9/25- Spring Clean Up

Su 3/9/25- Spring Clean Up 850am (2-LB: Panama Punch). 935am (1 hit-SB: Panama Punch). 325pm (1-LB: Permanent Marker). 535pm (1-LB:  Panama Punch). 815pm (1-LB: mix of both).  Up 615am (new time): Bright & sunny with temps to just over 60.  Weekly Cleaning Watched 'SQUAD 36' (Netflix). An interesting tale of a corrupt unit in Parisian law enforcement. This rogue squad ripped off a drug dealer and split the take. A member can't handle the guilt and went into rehab and cops kill cops to keep the incident secret. Not really a 'police procedural', but more of an 'internal affairs' genre film. It also features a great motorcycle chase through the streets of Paris during an intense rainstorm. The anti-hero is ready to hand in the proof and he is shot and killed as he brings back a car that he borrowed. His death has nothing to do with the original crime. Well worth a look.  More 'I'M MARRIED, BUT...' (Netflix). It's still very compelling and mo...

Up 545am: Bright & sunny with temps to low 50's.  'Spring Forward' tonight and today I'll begin to rake (with the new rake!) the gumballs on the front lawn. Watched 'MICKEY AND THE BEAR' (Hoopla). A stifling, yet deeply moving drama about a poor teenager from rural Montana who lives a turbulent life with her father. He's cross-addicted to alcohol and Oxy and suffers from a severe case of PTSD. Basically, he treats his daughter like a 'fill-in' for his dead wife and she has a shallow boyfriend who sees her as nothing more than 'the future mother of his children'. Mickey has dreams of attending college in San Diego, but her chances of breaking free seem slim to none. The film was realistic, but such a downer. The final scene has her literally running down the street and fleeing her ...

I ended 'Cheese Stands Alone' and began a new file. Last night I verified that the last 'Cheese' copied to the memory sticks.  Watched 'DELICIOUS' (Netflix). It's an incisive film dealing with social and economic warfare that morphs into a horror film.  A super rich German family spends their vacation at a sumptuous French country mansion and the resentment by the locals is palatable.  The vacationers are oblivious to the bad vibes and the locals plot secret and sinister revenge. It went a little off the rails when you learn that the 'rebels' are also cannibals. However, the tension built from start to finish and the film was a real nail biter. It's not rated, but I would ...

I think I did it but not fucking sure.  When I open the downstairs PC tonight I'll plug in the drives and see if it copied. Fuck I Hate This.   Watched 'LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL' (Kanopy). In a desperate bid for higher ratings a Late Night TV host takes the show in a radically different direction on their Halloween broadcast.  Mayhem ensues when a guest conjures a demon on national TV.  It's a kitschy, 'B'- Movie Horror Film that's clever and incisive. It really captured the feel of the 70's Talk Show vibe {Regardless of what occurs on the show, the commercials are most important} and made great use of tawdry special effects. 8 wins ...

From IMDB: "Two friends on a summer holiday in Spain become enamored with the same painter, unaware that his ex-wife, with whom he has a tempestuous relationship, is about to re-enter the picture." There was a lot of 'voice over' and that made it feel more like a novel than a movie.  However, I think that it worked because it was a complex piece about contemporary sexual mores that didn't offer any easy answers; with Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, Javier Bardem, Chris Messina, Patricia Clarkson. Directed by Woody Allen.  Won 1 Oscar; 32 wins & 54 nominat...

Up 530am:  Strong winds {a Wind Advisory is in effect}, rain and temps to mid 50's.  Watched 'FACELESS' (Netflix). A young man is convicted of a triple murder. He escapes custody, but he didn't do the killings. He just removed a sickle from the back of one of the victims after he stumbled upon the crime scene. Then he roams the country working at subsistence jobs and doing good deeds. Nothing in the film is the slightest bit believable and it's far too earnest and one of the corniest films I've ever seen.  I'd give it about a "68" Metascore. {A character owes $100,000 Japanese yen. Sounds like a lot but it's only $674 USD}.  Watched 'THE STONES AND BRIAN JONES' (Kanopy). It's composed ...
