A little melodramatic, but engrossing if you suspend belief. The storyline of a suburban mom who penetrates a sophisticated drug ring and assassinates the kingpin was very hard to accept; Gary Oldman, Evangeline Lilly, Greg Kinnear, and Martin Donovan. From The Washington Post: "This cinematic triple-decker sandwich is so overstuffed with baloney and cheese it ought to come with a pickle on the side." She liked it and I told her that it was made into a film- 'The Informer'.  Watched 'BORDER' (Kanopy).  This is a deadpan black comedy about a very unattractive woman who works as a security guard with a 'sense'. She has the superhuman ability to recognize blocked or concealed emotions such as fear, anxiety and shame in other people. She meets someone who seems to accept and understand her 'differentness'.  He tells her that they are actually 'trolls', but she learns that she's more of a  human than she thinks. The terrorist didn't recognize the authority of the court because diversity and multiculturalism have destroyed the government. However, he was sentenced to 21 years in solitary confinement. Watched 'THE TURNING POINT' (Netflix).  A thief has just robbed a crime family's money collector and he forces his way into a young man's apartment. The two men develop a bond and it's kind of a rift on the 'Stockholm Syndrome' in that the impulsive and 'alpha-type' thief helps the reclusive slacker develop a little toughness and take control of his life.  A very bleak ending because both men die, and the submissive guy's beautiful comic book is left out in the rain. He becomes involved in a series of bloody shenanigans and it turns out that the Japanese intelligence agency was behind all of the bad stuff. The mission is for a six person crew to skate across the channel behind enemy lines and deliver a package that could end the war. However the parcel is a bioweapon that will eventually kill everyone on the planet. An interesting scene is when the patrol is skating along and notices that there are hundreds of people frozen just above and below the surface of the ice. Overall, the film provides a compelling drama with a disappointing ending; with Noomi Rapace. Women were instrumental because it was believed that one would suspect them of spying for the simple fact that they were women. Based on real events and one of the main characters, Virginia Hall went on to become the first female agent in the CIA.  ***The disc was defective because it could not play subtitles and sections of the film were in German and French. I reported to Netflix that the disc was damaged but playable. However, there is no denying that the early 70's was one of the most interesting times in popular music, and I'm surprised that there are not more films about this particular era. Most of the action takes place on French submarines, but the backstory is that terrorists have procured a decommissioned Russian nuclear submarine and because the specs of the submarine have been deleted, no one knows it exists. 'Golden Ears' is able to identify the vessel by sound. Watching the film is a bit confusing because French nuclear codes and ship's procedures are very different from the US. Then I watched 'CATCHING KILLERS- Thrill Kills: The Phoenix Serial Shooter' (Netflix). A couple of dummies driving around with a shotgun. Watched the Netflix disc 'ZOLA' . A wild and crazy story of two 'stripper/prostitutes' on a weekend in Tampa, FL. The script is hilariously well-written and based on an actual story-thread on Twitter; with Taylour Paige, Riley Keough, Nicholas Braun, and Colman Domingo. "Outrageous and offensive, but authentic and not a caricature". Watched 'THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND' (Netflix).  An old man seems to be channeling some kind of 'force' and although his adult son lives with him,  'the powers' become too much for their living situation. No monsters or spirits, but a real sense of dread. It hints that extraterrestrials might be studying 'us' (humans) 'for our own benefit....according to their standards'. A little boy with a large facial birthmark 'remembers' a girl from the community who disappeared from their rural New York town many years previously. The local pastor murdered the missing teenager and the little boy 'knew' it. Reincarnation? Sixth Sense? Lucky Guess? An intriguing premise and shot in the Fall in Liberty, NY in Sullivan County, New York; with Tammy Blanchard, Zane Holtz, and Azhy Robertson (MARRIAGE STORY).   Then I watched the first episode of 'LIGHT THE NIGHT' (Netflix).
