Sa 6/29/24 705am (2-LB). 750am (1-B). 955am (1-LB). 105pm (2-LB).  245pm (1-LB). 535pm (2-LB). 810pm (2-LB).  ***Buddy threw up some clear liquid early this morning, but fine all day; upbeat & ravenous.  Up 540am: Partly cloudy with temps to upper 80's and very humid. Watered flowers Watched 'CHARACTER' (Amazon Prime). A terrific 'father and son' cautionary tale of a very strained family relationship. A young man in 1920's Rotterdam is being questioned by the police about the murder of his father. The film is a flashback about the boy, his relationship to his unbelievably distant parents,  his struggle to make it in the world, and how he has been arrested for the murder of his father. Dad was the city bailiff and it was his job to evict the poor and he was the perfect man for the job because he showed absolutely no mercy. It seems that the boy's parents believe in 'Tough Love' and the tougher the better. I liked this one. Won 1 Oscar; 18 wins ...

Fr 6/28/24- Buddy Sick

Fr 6/28/24- Buddy Sick  720am (2-LB). 755am (1-B). 945am (1-LB). 1215pm (2-LB).  545pm (2-LB). 820pm (2-LB).  Up 6am: Most cloudy with temps to low 80's. Stray showers around 430pm & muggy. ***Buddy threw up in the hallway last night and this afternoon when I returned from Esporta he had gotten sick in the kitchen. He seemed a little lethargic this morning. He hadn't been sick in a while and I hope he bounces back.  ***He was sick again on his mat by the breezeway,  5pm (?). Watered the flowers Entered 'THE LITIGATORS' by John Grisham in the blog.  Watched 'BEFORE, NOW & THEN' (Kanopy). Set in 60's rural Indonesia and concerns a woman who is married to a much older man and now their marriage is cooling. The woman's previous husband (who was presumed dead) has come back into her life. This causes much turmoil to her marriage, her children, and the community. A moving film, but I didn't understand a lot of it because it was deeply rooted to th...

Th 6/27/24 650am (2-LB). 730am (1-B). 830am (1-B). 930am (1-LB). 1155am (2-LB). 535pm (2-LB). 815pm (2-LB).  Up 545am: Mostly sunny with temps to low 80's. Watered flowers Watched 'WAR DOGS' (Netflix). A few years after high school two friends form a partnership and become arms dealers. The large war contractors divide up the pie and the two friends get rich on the crumbs, or that was the plan... Fun Fact: $17,500- cost to military equip each foot soldier in Iraq; with Jonah Hill, Miles Teller, Ana de Armas, Kevin Pollack, and Bradley Cooper. "57" Metascore and I might have rated it a couple of points higher.  Watched 'HATE TO LOVE: Nickelback' (Netflix). How can Nickelback be so popular and so hated at the same time? I think it's because there is an inexhaustible supply of people who prefer mild, loud, and non-threatening music if it's got a good beat and it's easy to dance to.  1130am: PC is 'Off and the plan is to do the weights and hit ...

We 6/26/24

We 6/26/24 735am (2-HB). 825am (1-B). 935am (1-B). 1220pm (2-LB). 535pm (2-LB). 815pm (2-LB).  Up 630am: According to the rain guage we got about an inch of rain last night. Today it will be cloudy & drizzle early then clearing by late afternoon and temps to low 80's. The heat wave has abated. Watched 'HURLYBURLY' (Amazon Prime). The film is a rambling record of some very stoned conversations between a group of 'friends' who have a tangential relationship to Tinseltown. The film profiles highly verbal individuals who have the time, means, and cash to do anything, yet they relentlessly confuse emotional mastery with extreme self-absorption; with Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri, Robin Wright, Garry Shandling, Anna Paquin, and Meg Ryan. Said Roger Ebert: "The Movie follows the loop-the-loops of habitual drug users"...."The guy who dies in an accident understands the nature of destiny"- Is this a suicide note or merely an observation? {...

Rain is predicted for late tonight.  Watered flowers out front Watched 'TRIGGER WARNING' (Netflix). Filmed near Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico. What a stoopid movie. A female secret agent (?) returns home to rural New Mexico after her father has been killed in a mine cave in. The heroine's father literally had his man-cave inside of an actual cave. Was it suicide, an accident, or murder? Tunnels from the cave lead to an army base and the bad guys are stealing weapons and selling them on the Dark Web. A witless fight scene with a Stooges song blaring in the background (foreground?) was the best part of the film; with Jessica Alba as the 'Girl Boss Man'; "38" Metascore and I would have rated it lower.   ***AC 'On' by 930am Began 'KAULITZ KAULITZ' (Netflix). Watched 'CLIFF WALKERS' (Kanopy). Four Chinese spies return to China after training in the USSR and their aim is to expose murder & corruption within the Japanese occupation of Manchuria. However, someone is engaging in counterespionage and their network has been betrayed. This film was very hard to understand, but the scenes, sets and costumes were enough to maintain your interest. Some of the scenes shot in deep snow were some of the best I have ever seen. 35 wins & 49 nominations. Finished '30 FOR 30: The Life & Trials of Oscar Pistorius' (Netflix). At first he was found not guilty of murder, but he got a manslaughter charge- 5 years. The state felt five years was out of the question and took the case to the supreme court. They ruled that it w...

Su 6/23/24- Mowed Lawn: 830am- 930am

Su 6/23/24- Mowed Lawn: 830am-930am 955am (2-LB). 1045am (1-LB).  150pm (2-LB). 320pm (1-LB). 535pm (2-LB). 815pm (2-LB).  Up 6am: Cloudy to partly sunny with temps only to upper 80's and a few degrees cooler than it has been, but the humidity makes up for it.  Weekly Cleaning Read 'FINGERSMITH': 720am-820am Mowed Lawn: 830am- 930am; Trimmed the hedge next to the security fence and pulled some vines off the tree in the garden on the other side of the lot.  According to the blog the last time that I mowed the lawn was on Mo 5/29. This has been a true Heat Wave, and at least my grass is not burned out (yet).  1035am: Watered the front flowers Watched 'NAHIR' (Amazon Prime). A young and beautiful woman from Argentina has a violent boyfriend. She either shot him as they were on his motorbike or her father was following them and then he shot the boy. Nahir Galarza is the youngest female to receive a life sentence in Argentina, however the case is under appeal. Set ne...

Sa 6/22/24

Sa 6/22/24 8am (2-LB). 835am (1-B). 930am (1-B). 1pm (2-LB). 245pm (1-LB). 540pm (2-LB).  Up 640am: Bright & sunny to cloudy with temps to mid 90's. I talked to the guy next door after I watered the plants out front. He was talking about his experience with Williams Plumbing. They had to 'snake' his sewer lines and it was very expensive. I told him about my difficulty with their 'monthly plan' many years ago. And now I'm running late.  Watched 'GOLD BRICK' (Netflix). Workers at a French perfume company steal perfume and if they keep it below 1.1% of the total inventory it won't be noticeable to company accountants. That was the plan, but when the company is up for sale things take a turn. An interesting take on French economics and I don't know how this might have been if it had been set in the US.  More of '30 for 30: THE LIFE & TRIALS OF OSCAR PISTORIUS' (Netflix). I shut it down one hour into episode #2. I will continue the se...

Fr 6/21/24 735am (2-LB). 820am (1-B). 955am (1-LB). 1245pm (2-LB). 540pm (2-LB). 820pm (2-LB).  Up 630am: {Restless night; diarrhea 330am} Partly sunny with temps to low 90's. Heat Advisory is in effect. Watered the flowers and opened the windows. Finished 'SEBASTIAN FITZEK'S: Therapy' (Amazon Prime).  A completely unhinged series and even at the end I didn't know how much was hallucination or how much was real. Dad had been poisoning Josy for years, but the motive was more than a little unclear. He was slowly killing her because he didn't want to lose her?  Josy and mom split to another mansion and were living happily ever after until Josy drops by during the final scene. The show was taken from a novel and that must be a doozy of a read. Part of the story happens on the fictional island of Parkum. The series was shot on the island of Amrum in the German North Sea. Watched 'THE WOMAN AND THE MURDERER' (Netflix). A documentary about the Guy Georges, the...

Th 6/20/24- Gummy Stoned

Th 6/20/24- Gummy Stoned 705am (2-LB). 745am (1-B). 915am (1-B). [1230pm- one 200mg Diet Smoke gummy]. 1235pm (2-LB). 535pm (1-LB). 820pm (2-LB).  Up 540am: Bright & sunny with temps to lower 90's.  Watered the flowers and it was cool enough to open the windows early.  830am -845am: The city picked up the branch piles on Westview. Since the guy across the street trimmed his trees yesterday, I wonder if he knew that the city trucks would be here today?  A few minutes later a different truck (with a claw pickup) knocked down and hauled away a large dead limb on a tree up the street. Above and beyond...maybe someone reported that the hanging branch could cause a possible street/car accident? Watched 'SK 1' (Kanopy). Based on the true story of rapist and serial killer, Guy Georges {The Beast of Bastille} who roamed the streets of Paris for seven years in the 1990's. This case made French authorities develop their national DNA program because Georges's killing c...

However, it was cool enough to open the windows early this morning.  ***735am: I noticed the 'Corvette Guy' cutting limbs (taller than the roof of his house) from the trees in his backyard. He had a big ladder and extension clippers (borrowed from work?) and he was talking (yelling) on the phone the whole time. He's got a big branch pile out front and winded down shortly after 9am. Watered flowers Watched 'LUMBERJACK THE MONSTER' (Netflix).  A psychotic Japanese married couple who are doctors steal babies. They are looking for sociopathic children and they want to implant neuron chips to see if behavior can be controlled.  A subplot is derived from a children's book where a lumberjack kills and eats his human victims. Later he realizes that he's more of a lumberjack than a cannibalistic serial k...

Watered flowers, but still too hot to open the windows. Watched 'DON'T COME BACK FROM THE MOON' (Kanopy- 80 mins)). A romantic portrayal of poor people living in the wreckage of abandoned communities around the Salton Sea. 'Going to the moon' is their euphemism for starting a new life somewhere else. The theme is that it's tough leaving what you know for something risky and new. The film's weakness is that it's hard to understand why anyone would want to stay. They're already at rock bottom, so anywhere else is up; with James Franco & Rashida Jones. Filmed near Bombay Beach, CA.  Watched 'KNUCKLEBALL' (Amazon Prime). A preteen boy is left in very rural and snowy Alberta Canada with his estranged grandfather while his parents attend a funeral.  Mayhem ensues and th...

Dangerously hot conditions through the end of the month.  Watering flowers & even too hot at dawn to open the windows.  Watched 'CLOSE' (Hoopla). Leo and Remi are two twelve year old boys in rural Belgium who are best friends. They have a falling out and Remi commits suicide. Guilt over Leo's responsibility is the core theme- " I pushed him away". An interesting profile of someone who is experiencing same sex attraction and his confusion over feelings of  anger, shame, and regret.  Nominated for 1 Oscar; 58 wins & 83 nominations. "81" Metascore. Filmed near Zundert, Netherlands and Wetteren, Belgium. Watched 'HE WENT THAT WAY' (Kanopy).  A 'Buddy/ Road Film' about two guys and a chimpanzee. One of the guys is a serial killer and nothing about this film made any sense. As the...

Su 6/16/24 650am (2-LB). 735am (1-LB). 955am (1-LB). 1155am (2-LB). 540pm (2-LB).  Up 515am: Hot & sunny with temps to mid 90's. Weekly Cleaning & watered the flowers Watched 'THE PROMISED LAND' (Hoopla). Set in 1755 a retired captain tries to farm 'Jutland', a barren peninsula of Germany that will later be known as 'Denmark'. It's the King's land, but a corrupt nobleman wants it for himself. The two men clash, and the captain loses, but the area becomes settled and cultivated. Potatoes save the day and a young girl is 'bad luck' because her skin is darker than the local yokels; with Mads Mikkelsen. 21 wins & 15 nominations. "77" Metascore and that's about where I'd rate it. An unusual treatment of basically an 'American Western' set in Old World Europe- In the US the plot would have been that a rich cattleman owned all the land and tried to keep the settlers powerless and dependent upon him. Watched ...

Watered flowers out front. Watched 'BABY RUBY' & borrowed 'THE PROMISED LAND' and 'Close' from Hoopla. 'BABY RUBY' (Hoopla). It's got a 'Rosemary's Baby' vibe, but it's actually one long rift on Postpartum Depression. It was all in her mind so there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Filmed in Saugerties, NY- upstate New York and near Woodstock. "57" Metascore and that's about what I would rate it.   More of 'INGOBERNABLE' (Netflix). I shut it down 13 minutes into episode #8. This is like an overheated 'WEST WING' for Mexico. The rebels (and the dead president's wife) are trying to locate a political concentration camp run by the military. They torture and kill anyone who is against the status quo. T...

Watered the flowers & Paid Card ***Last night the downstairs PC asked for a 'restart' and this morning I had to update the living room PC. Both went smoothly and only took a couple of minutes.  Borrowed 'BEAST' & 'BABY RUBY' from Hoopla.  Watched 'BEAST' (Hoopla). A young woman falls for a local 'bad boy' in the thick of a multiple murder investigation. She's carrying the guilt of attacking  a girl with scissors when she was in high school and her 'bad boy' is guilty and in the end she strangles him.  The revelation that they are 'the same' was quite a stretch. The tension and red herrings kept things moving along, but the ending was a bit of a letdown; with Johnny Flynn & Jessie Buckley and filmed on Jersey, Chan...

The Heat Wave has arrived.  Watered the flowers in front.  Watched 'PILECKI'S REPORT' (Netflix). A Polish officer, Witold Pilecki agrees to be imprisoned in Auschwitz to organize a resistance movement and send out information about the camp. After the war Soviet authorities arrested him and he was tortured and killed. I guess he was a true Polish hero because he felt that the Stalinists were no better than the Nazis.  Watched 'BEYOND THE INFINITE TWO MINUTES' (Amazon Prime). An owner of a small Japanese cafe notices that one of his computer monitors can see two minutes into the future. He and his friends try to 'extend their window into the future', but what actually happens seems a bit beyond their control. The film was only an hour and ten minutes and just long enough. Fil...

Watered the flowers in front. Watched 'MILES AHEAD' (Tubi). Mostly it concerns the disputed ownership of a reel to reel tape of Miles Davis's music and his turbulent life with Frances. I don't know how much was true, but it captured many aspects of 'the myth' of Miles Davis; with Don Cheadle, Ewan McGregor, and LaKeith Stanfield. Directed by Don Cheadle. Although set in NYC it was filmed entirely in Cincinnati, OH."64" Metascore and I would have rated a couple of points higher.    "When you're creating your own shit, man... even the sky ain't the limit. " ---- Miles Davis Watched 'ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWEIRD' (Amazon Prime). It's shot on a shoestring budget and slightly above the level of a student film. I wasted ninety minutes of my life. '...

A heat wave is on the way with temps to low 90's and no rain for at least a week.  Watched 'RED STATE' (Tubi). The flipside of 'Woke-ism'. A group of crazed, bible thumping and heavily armed Christians believe they must cleanse the world of gays and anyone else that differs from their extreme point of view. Nice idea, but the real plus is that there are so many great actors in this rather one dimensional (yet enjoyable) film; with Michael Parks, Melissa Leo, John Goodman, and Anna Gunn (BREAKING BAD). Directed by Kevin Smith. Began 'YOU ARE NOT ALONE: Fighting The Wolf Pack' (Netflix). A young woman is sexually assaulted by four (5?) men at the Festival of San Fermin {Running of the Bulls} in the city of Pamplona, Navarre, Spain. This incident led to changing public opinion on sexual violence and a chang...

I watered the front flowers for the first time this season. Watched 'BABYTEETH' (Kanopy). A twenty-three year old street junkie meets a high school girl who is dying of cancer and they fall in love. Sounds ridiculous, but the film was hilarious, sad, and thought provoking. I loved it! Nominated for 1 BAFTA Award; 30 wins & 29 nominations. "77: Metascore. Set and filmed in Sydney, Australia.  A new neighbor is very pregnant and calling out for her dog, Henry. The man's name is Henry as well. "Henry is a dog's name". "You shouldn't be smoking". A guy is on the run from the mob and he calls a friend for help. During that wild & crazy night we learn more and more about their strained & complicated relationship. Directed by Elaine May; with John Cassavetes, Peter Falk, Ned Beatty, and M. Emmet Walsh. "81" Metascore. Watched 'SMALL TIME CROOKS' (Tubi). {Recommended on 'We Might Be Drunk'}. They might have bitten off more than they could chew (many social and political issues), but I applaud the effort. I really liked this one! One of the last scenes in the film was shot on MacDougal St. in Greenwich Village, NYC outside of the Villa Mosconi Restaurant; with Benedict Cumberbatch, Gaby Hoffman, and McKinley Belcher III (this is the actor that played the closeted gay detective and he is gay 'real life'). 9am: The PC is 'Off' and preparing to visit Heartland on St. Joseph and then to Conestoga to return the FitBit.   930am- 1130am Heartland/ Meijer UPS. A student activist in Venezuela is captured by military police, tortured and forced to sign incriminating documents that allow him to flee to Miami. In the US he meets a young woman who helps him with his immigration problems and soon he must address his conflicted feelings about his relationship to revolution and the dictatorship. Facing down tyranny is no picnic. This Fun Fact from the final credits: "Over 7.7 million Venezuelans have left their country. It is the largest exodus recorded in the history of the western hemisphere." More 'ERIC' (Netflix). Now we know that the kid is alive and down in the tunnels of the NYC subway system. 'Happy Birthday Willow' signage is on the lawn of the two girls across the street.  Watched 'THE ACCOUNTANT' (Netflix). 'The Accountant' launders money for some of the most dangerous people on the planet and he's the baddest hitman of them all. He's also very much affected by autism. Lots of chop-socky and corny pap about the nature of autism. It did have some nice work by Anna Kendrick; with Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, and J.K. Simmons. 3 wins & 5 nominations. "51" Metascore and that's about where I would rate it. I had second thoughts about giving him more food, but I gave him a bit and he kept it down. He seemed his usual self when I got up. Up 545am: Fierce random storms very early (at 545am it was raining so hard that I could barely see the street), then clearing with temps to about 80.  Watched 'THE PAIN HUSTLERS' (Netflix). A Dramedy about how a pharmaceutical company bribed doctors at local pain clinics to prescribe dangerously addictive drugs and laid the foundation for the Opioid Epidemic; with Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O'Hara, Andy Garcia, and Jay Duplass. "44" Metascore although I would have rated it slightly higher. It was very entertaining and although I had seen this before, it was well worth a second look.   More 'RAISING VOICES' (Netflix). I think the wandering kitty belongs to the two young girls house across the street. Watched 'ATLAS' (Netflix). Bloated with CGI and more like a video game or cartoon than a film. The robots attempt a takeover of Earth and a woman who is responsible for the malevolent AI tries to even the score. Much of the film is Jennifer Lopez's character fumbling to operate a robot exoskeleton and still look cool. So corny it was almost good; with Jennifer Lopez and Mark Strong. Watched 'GALORE' (Tubi).  Mo 6/3/24- Paid Taxes  645am (2-LB). 730am (1-B). 1220pm (2-LB). 345pm (1-B). 540pm (2-LB). 815pm (2-LB).  Up 530am: A mix of sun & clouds with temps to mid 80's. ***Last night I didn't get up to feed Buddy during the night. Later I noticed that he had thrown up water in the kitchen. He seemed fine and his appetite was normal (voracious). Maybe when he's very hungry,  he drinks water and when that doesn't satisfy,  he throws it up.   Watched 'A THOUSAND AND ONE' (Amazon Prime). An unsympathetic yet authentic profile of a poor black woman who is heroically trying to be a single parent, but failing miserably. She was a product of foster care and wants to avoid putting her son through this damaging system. 'The Reveal' is that she kidnapped the boy when he was a two year old wandering around in front of a group home. I would think that mom would have been arrested immediately, but the issue isn't addressed in the film. This is a powerful film and a...

A German SciFi/ Thriller that deals with an old murder investigation, Time Travel, and a missing copy of 'The Book of Etruscans'. It made very little sense and barely rose to the level of a student film.  More of 'RAISING VOICES' (Netflix). Finished episode #3. Filmed in Madrid, Spain.  1140am: PC is 'Off' and will do the weights and then visit Esporta. Weights: 3 sets/ 15 reps 1240pm: To Esporta...45"Precor,  45"Treadmill,  30"Cross,  30"Recumbent Bike,  30"Precor; watched the first 30" of 'DIE HART 2' (Amazon Prime)- not worth my time; watched a few episodes of 'TIRES' (Netflix)- Shane Gillis works at a tire shop in suburban Pennsylvania.  Sa 6/1/24- (2) Gummies {Super Stoned} 650am (2-LB). 810am (1-B).  840am (1-B).  {9am:One gummy "DIET SMOKE: 'Bold' 200 mg THC"}. [12pm:One gummy VIIA]. 1230pm (1-LB). 420pm (1-B). 540pm (2-LB). 815pm (2-LB).  Up 530am: Cloudy with periods of light rain and temps to lower 70's.  Watched 'THE SECOND MOTHER' (Hoopla). A maid in Sao Paulo, Brazil is part of the family to her employers, but is she? The film is a wry tale about Motherhood, but it's mostly about Class. I really liked this one! 34 wins & 31 nominations. "82" Metascore. The film stars Regina Case who is a famous Brazilian actress and TV talk show host. Parts were filmed in Morumbi, São Paulo, Brazil which is a very wealthy neighborhood.  *** {One gummy DIET SMOKE- 200 mg}    ***955am: I believe that I'm coming on. Lets try to set the calendar for June. The THC doesn't seem to be a factor, but 'June' was a hard month- lots of tiles. Maybe THC was a factor?  Finishe...

Fr 5/31/24- Yard Sale on Red Oak

Fr 5/31/24- Yard Sale on Red Oak 635am (2-LB). 715am (1-B). 540pm (2-LB). 815pm (2-LB).  Up 535am: A mix of sun & clouds with temps to about 80. Watched 'COLORS OF EVIL: Red' (Netflix). A female Polish judge's daughter is raped and murdered. She teams with a young detective and they find links to a vicious serial killer who owns a successful and popular nightclub. 'The Reveal' is that the judge's daughter was not murdered by the psycho, but it was a friend who killed her when she refused to have sex with him. Parts of the film were very graphically violent and that is saying something! A man's lip is cut off and then his throat is slashed by a box cutter. The film is based on a Polish trilogy and I checked Amazon, but none of the books are published in English. 910am: The PC is 'Off' and preparing to do five miles on the treadmill before I head over to Red Oak for the yard sale: 9am- 6pm. 925am: FIVE MILES AT 4.1 PACE AND ZERO SLANT;  watched an...
