We 9/29/21-Booster at Noon: Walgreens- DENIED

We 9/29/21-Booster at Noon: Walgreens- DENIED 845am. 340pm (a pinch). 915pm.  Up 710am: Mostly sunny with temps to 90. Watched 'THE CREW' (Netflix- French title is 'BRAQUEURS' which means 'Robbers'). Not even 90 minutes, but really packs a wallop. A Parisian gang that specializes in armoured truck heists is coerced into robbing a few kilos of heroin from a rival mob. The first armoured car robbery is not even money, but a few thousand blank French passports that are worth 2,500 Euros a piece. It was so good I wish it was longer. Began the first episode of 'THE CHESTNUT MAN' (Netflix). 1115am: PC is 'Off' and preparing for an 1130am walk to Walgreens for the noon booster shot appointment. They said that they were out of the vaccine. What was the purpose of registering if the fuckers were not holding my dose?  I walked from Walgreens behind McD's and across to Washington and asked if CVS had a dose. NO! Up Washington,  Adams, Park south to Wa...

Tu 9/28/21

Tu 9/28/21 940am. 210pm (a pinch). 835pm.  Up 750am: Sunny with temps to 90. ***A big dumpster arrived yesterday in their driveway and this morning they began removing the shingles on Bob and Carol's house across the street. Sutton is doing the job.  Watched Netflix disc 'NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN'. I had forgotten that the film was directed by The Cohen Brothers and the movie is violent, funny, and clever. Reading the novel is almost like perusing a screenplay,  but I was surprised with the exaggerated West Texas accents and oddball philosophizing. That really isn't spelled out in the novel and the wry witticisms are pure Cohen; with Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald, and Tess Harper.  The Bonus Features were very informative and helped to really understand both the film and the book.  145pm: PC is 'Off' and preparing to walk to the Monroe PO to mail back the discs.  220pm: Fairway, Governor, Capitol,...

Mo 9/27/21

Mo 9/27/21 11am. 235pm (a pinch). 850pm. Up 725am: Sunny, breezy, and warmer with temps to 90. I called Walgreens and scheduled an appointment for the Covid booster shop this Wednesday, 9/29 at noon. The clerk says that I need an authorization from my doctor. When I called Ellison's office they said that it's up to the provider (Walgreens) and they might be saving the vaccine for 'high risk' people. I'll just head to Walgreens on Wednesday and see if they'll give it to me. I called ATT Benefits to schedule personal help during the enrollment period. I called at 840am and they are to call me back within an hour (or so). When they called back they informed me that it was a misprint in the pamphlet that they sent. This service begins on Oct 4th, next Monday, and not today. Why I hate 'phone phun' and I do it all over again Monday. I wrote the Chat Wrap and sent it off. Watched 'PANIC ROOM' (Pluto TV).  I tried to get the closed caption back, but I...

Su 9/26/21

Su 9/26/21 9am. 1135am (a pinch). 310pm. 930pm. Up 715am: Mostly sunny with temps to low 80's, but a Fall heatwave is heading to Springfield with temps to hit 90 over the next few days. Watched 'HIGH LIFE' (Amazon Prime- leaving 9/30, now leaving 10/3. Why?). Death row inmates of the future are given a chance to explore outer space for science. They will be part of an experiment to conceive and raise a human child in space.  A baby is born and a man must raise his daughter, but since it's strictly a one way ride, they aim for the closest Black Hole and hope for the best. A little weak on plausibility, but a clever presentation and beautifully shot; with Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, and Andre 3000. To the people on the ship, eighteen and a half years had passed, and to the people on Earth, two hundred and ten years and a half had passed...Legendary 'female masturbation scene' with Juliette Binoche. Watched 'BLANK CITY' (Kanopy). A fascinating ove...

Sa 9/25/21- Buddy Sick/ Trimmed Hedge

Sa 9/25/21 925am. 1135am (a pinch). 330pm (a pinch). 920pm.  Up 730am: A trace of fog early to mostly sunny with temps only to low 70's. Watched 'RIDESHARE' (Hoopla- I borrowed this title yesterday). This is a strange little film that offers some thought provoking ideas about America's infatuation with social media.  A creepy and hulking rideshare driver goes on a late night killing spree in contemporary Los Angeles. In the final scene we learn that the killer has created an elaborate ruse to frame his older brother for the murders. The film was shot with a 'Red Dragon Camera' and I watched part of a video about this piece of  state-of-the-art equipment.  ***1140am: Buddy threw up everything that he'd eaten today. I noticed that he threw up a hairball early this morning. Around 1215pm I gave him more to eat and he's kept it down, but he's been pretty sedated all day.  Watched episode 1 of 'JAILBIRDS OF NEW ORLEANS' (Netflix).  A documentary a...

Fr 9/24/21

Fr 9/24/21 905am. 1140 am (a pinch). 155pm.  920pm.   Up 720am: Bright and sunny with temps to 80. Watched 'DIAMOND MEN' (Amazon Prime). I saw this film at 'The Overlooked Film Festival' in Champaign many years ago. It leaves Amazon Prime in 8 days. A real crowd pleaser and an example of the finest in low-budget, Independent filmmaking. An older man finds respect and affection at a ramshackle Pennsylvania house of prostitution and the ending was a total surprise. He didn't get robbed, but he faked out the robbers, his horrible boss, and ended up with over a million dollars in uncut gems. And, he sails off into the Mexican sunset with the love of his life; with Robert Forster and Donnie Wahlberg.  Watched the next two episodes of 'CRIME STORIES: India Detectives' (Netflix). (1) A guy is murdered and his mother and her family are convinced his wife did it. Not the case- The guy was blackmailing a couple and demanding sex from the wife. The couple had enough...

Th 9/23/21

Th 9/23/21 935am. 1220pm (a pinch). 3pm. 920pm.  Up 710am: Bright and sunny with temps to just over 70. I noticed another 'noise' when I booted up the living room PC. I had left 'Goats Head Soup' in the player and the computer was trying to play the disc. Everything is fine. I wrote up 'RAIN DOGS' by Sean Doolittle for the blog.  Watched 'KILL THE IRISHMAN' (Xfinity). A hyper-melodramatic account of the Cleveland mobster, Daniel Greene.  True Fact: 36 bombs exploded in Cleveland during the summer of 1976 in Danny Greene's war with the Italian mafia. A great subject for a film, but this was a little too over-the-top. The dialog was almost a parody of a gangster movie, but still worth a look.  Then I watched episode 2 of 'MONSTERS INSIDE: The 24 Faces of Billy Mulligan' (Netflix). Legally I think it would work better if competency was never an issue. If evidence proves you did it, you are sentenced.  Extenuating circumstances such as abusive c...

We 9/22/21- Aetna Visit

We 9/22/21- Aetna Visit 1050am. 1pm (a pinch). 920pm.  Up 720am: Mostly sunny and windy with temps only to 70. FIRST DAY OF FALL. I didn't even turn on the PC and was reading 'INHERENT VICE' by Thomas Pynchon that I began last night. At 945am I got a call from Linsey, the Aetna nurse practitioner, to tell me that she had an opening in her schedule and she arrived at 10am (the original appointment was scheduled between noon and 1pm.). Finished by 1030am. I'm in great shape and she took blood pressure and listened to my heart. The blood pressure reading was perfect and I was a bit apprehensive that I might register 'too low', but everything was ok. She didn't know anything about insurance questions. Watched 'THE DOORS- When You're Strange' (Amazon Prime). This didn't get very good reviews, and one critic dismissed the film as 'banal', but I thought the 'Lost Doors' footage was remarkable.  Morrison reffered to The Doors as ...

Tu 9/21/21

Tu 9/21/21 935am. 1215pm (a pinch). 935pm.  Up 8am: Misty early and cloudy with temps only to the upper 60's. ***PC made a strange 'grinding' sound when I booted up. When I did a 'restart', no change, but when I 'powered off' and restarted, it stopped and everything was Okey Doke with extra cheese. I wrote up 'PERSONAL FREEDOM' by Arthur Deikman for the blog. Watched 'THE STRONGHOLD' (Netflix). Three detectives employ questionable tactics to take out a drug network operating in a Marseilles housing project. The gang runs the complex and even the cops do not enter uninvited. But, you can't break the law to enforce the law; with Gilles Lellouche, Francois Civil, Karim Leklouy, and Adele Exarchopoulos. Watched episode #1 of 'SQUID GAME' (Netflix). A Korean take on "The Hunger Games" series. I didn't realize this three volume series by Suzanne Collins is one of the most 'banned' in schools and libraries...10,00...

Mo 9/20/21

Mo 9/20/21 925am. 1140am (a pinch). 130pm. 930pm.  Up 730am: Cloudy to partly cloudy with highs in the low 80's. Watched 'FROZEN RIVER' (Amazon Prime). An American woman with two children living near the Canadian border becomes a partner with a young Mohawk woman who smuggles illegal aliens across the border for cash. The people portrayed in the film are so poor that anything they might do to make a living is almost excusable; with Melissa Leo and Mark Boone Junior.   Watched the first episode of 'CREEPSHOW': Gray Matter (Amazon Prime). The father of a teenage boy becomes infected with a mutant virus from drinking a tainted can of cheap beer and a young girl tries to control the drama in her haunted dollhouse. Basic corny nonsense, but Stephen King wrote the first one.  I called Walgreens and they do have the flu shot for people over 65. ****Stock market plunges 750 points because of China (?).  1pm: PC is 'Off' and preparing for a walk downtown. 140pm: Go...

Su 9/19/21

Su 9/19/21 955am. 115pm (3 hits). 350pm. 955pm.  Up 815am: Mostly sunny with temps to 90. The AC is 'On'. Washed the sheets Watched 'SAFE HOUSE' (Netflix). A fairly competent 'Spy Thriller' with no new ground broken; with Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynods, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, Ruben Blades, and Joel Kinnaman. Filmed in South Africa. Spent time loading 'GOATS HEAD SOUP' onto my mp3 player. The secret to the puzzle (and it is a fucking mystery)  is to make the transfer from the windows app that rips the cd. What idiot decided that it would be a good idea to remove the music file folder from Windows 10?  120pm: Watched the next 2 episodes of 'POST MORTEM' (Netflix)... "Living is dangerous, no one has survived it yet". 3pm: PC is 'Off' and did the Weekly Cleaning. 4pm: To Planet Fitness. 45" Cross. 45" Treadmill. 30" Bike. 30" Treadmill. 30" Cross. Sa 9/18/21- A Visit From The Brandenburgs

Sa 9/18/21 855am. 910pm (a pinch). 1050pm (a pinch).  Up 730am: Sunny and hot with temps to about 90. ***Text from Janny and Joe that they would be out to garage sales and over to 940 this afternoon. Watched 'KATE' (Netflix). A female 'assassin for hire' is poisoned and has less than 24 hours to live, yet she must finish her last assignment. A corny plot and nearly the same  story as in '24 HOURS TO LIVE' with Ethan Hawke (2017). Winstead makes it worthwhile because she is as good or better than any 'action hero' out there; with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson. Preparing the house for a visit and then watched the last of 'ZAPPA' (Netflix disc), but didn't finish because the Brandenburgs Arrived.  1230pm-430pm- A very pleasant visit. I had planned to offer them cold Pepsi, but the drinks were flat because they had been in the pantry for several (?) years.... Into the Big Blue Can.  445pm: On the treadmill...5 MILES AT 3.6 PACE and ...

Fr 9/17/21

Fr 9/17/21 740am (a pinch). 925am (a pinch). 505pm. 9pm.   Up 7am: Sunny with temps to mid 80's. 745am: County Market; home and put away by 830am: $86.00 ***Mixed Grill***This morning I tried to test whether the 'Mixed Grill' Friskeys was making Buddy sick. It doesn't seem to matter. He ate a can and he seemed to really love it.  Watched 'THE BEST OF ENEMIES' (Netflix). Based on the true story of  a task force to promote race relations in Durham, North Carolina in 1970; "Charrette- a meeting in which all stakeholders in a project attempt to resolve conflicts and map solutions." This leads to an unlikely friendship between the local leader of the Klan and a black female organizer. A nice story, but a little too sanitized and 'Hallmarky'; with Taraji P. Henson, Sam Rockwell, Anne Heche, Wes Bentley, and Bruce McGill. 1230pm: PC is 'Off' and will read for a bit and then hit the treadmill.   1240pm: 5 MILES AT 3.6 PACE and watched ARI SHAFF...

Th 9/16/21

Th 9/16/21 915am. 1220pm (a pinch). 255pm. 925pm.  Up 720am: Sunny with temps to low 80's. I wrote up 'NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN' by Cormac McCarthy for the blog and added the disc to my Netflix queue...(Long Wait).  Paid the card(s).  Watched 'THE DARK VALLEY' (Amazon Prime). My pick because Sam Riley also starred as Ian Curtis in 'CONTROL'. In the late 19th century a mysterious American stranger visits a village in the Tyrolean Alps and mayhem ensues. Whenever any of the locals got married, the village's corrupt leader had to sleep with the wife first.  The stranger's mother suffers this indignity and his revenge involves killing everyone one involved. Shot in South Tyrol, Italy (The Italian Alps). Not a bad film, but maybe if I hadn't seen 'PALE RIDER' I would have liked it more. Clint Eastwood is a much better 'lethal stranger' because he wrote the book on the genre.  ***During the film I got a call from Aetna to schedule an ...

We 9/15/21

We 9/15/21 955am. 125pm. 905pm.  Up 730am: Sunny with temps to just about 80. ***Added Jaco Pastorius, Kingsmen, and Boss Hog to Mp3. Now 'music' on the PC is nearly impossible to find.  ***The updates on the upstairs PC were not completed and I did it this morning. I did it with the update running in the background. This is way too much hassle. I began 'CLICKBAIT' (Netflix series). Lots of theatrical twists and turns and each episode reflects another 'character' within the melodrama; 'The Sister', 'The Detective', 'The Wife', etc. This is in the 'top ten' on Netflix this week and I completely agree.  1pm: PC is 'Off' and preparing for a long walk.  135pm: Wash. Tu 9/14/21- Mowed Lawn and trimmed flowers along the front walk

Tu 9/14/21 910am. 155pm. 915pm. 1015pm (a pinch).  Up 730am: Sunny with temps to upper 80's and a 40% chance of storms later this afternoon. The rain never happened.  ***Downloaded Windows Updates although I'm not really sure if the September updates have been posted by 8am this morning. It did not and I didn't learn of this until Wednesday morning.  Watched the last segment of 'JOHN ADAMS'- Netflix disc.  It features a particularly grisly scene of an 18th century mastectomy where the woman bites on a stick for her pain because reliable anesthesia didn't exist.  1020am: PC is 'Off' and will take a short walk to the Walgreens PO box; 1030am-1020am. ***11am-1215pm: When I got home I decided to mow the lawn. I cut down the flowers along the front walk for Fall.  Showered and on the couch reading 'BODIES ELECTRIC '- Colin Harrison.  2pm: Watched 'LENNY' (Kanopy).   Mo 9/13/21 9am. 1245pm. 915pm.  Up 730am: Mostly sunny with temps to about 90. I wrote up 'MIDNIGHT' by Dean Koontz for the blog. Watched 'PALE RIDER' (Tubi).  A mysterious stranger defends a mining camp against a corrupt land baron and his crew. Eastwood just about invented the genre and nobody does it better; with Clint Eastwood, Michael Moriarty, Carrie Snodgress, Chris Penn, and John Russell. The beautiful location was one of the best elements of the movie and it was filmed at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area in central Idaho. ***I noticed a post on Nextdoor concerning...."Like minded patriots in Southern View who want to do something about... the bla-fucking-bla..." 1220pm: PC is 'Off' and preparing for an early walk. 1255pm: Oakmont, Country Club, Laurel, Outer Park, Lowell, Walnut, Wash. Su 9/12/21

Su 9/12/21 905am. 1110am (a pinch). 310 (a pinch). 930pm (a pinch). Up 740am: Bright and sunny with temps to 90. Spent a while checking what's on Tubi and various other streaming services. Watched 'THE WOMEN AND THE MURDERER' (Netflix). The biggest takeaway is that France did not have a national DNA database until 1998. In the US we think it is obvious, but in France many felt that it was 'government overreach'.  The crux of the defense seemed to be that since Guy Georges was not a 'monster', he couldn't be guilty. Wouldn't this be laughed out of an American court?  Watched the last episode of 'THE FROZEN DEAD' (Netflix). The story was far too confusing and the ending was less than satisfying. The best part of the series was the location- Late winter and early spring in The French Pyrenees. I began the first two episodes of 'THE CHAIR' (Netflix) and I will continue at Planet Fitness later this afternoon.  It's very funny and sma...

In honor of '9/11' I decided to watch 'DIE HARD' (Tubi). A NYC cop visits his ex-wife in Los Angeles. They meet in a downtown office building just as a sophisticated criminal gang has overtaken the building in an attempt to steal $600 million in bearer bonds. Lots of 'Boom Boom' and about what you would expect; with Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Bonnie Bedelia, Reginald VelJohnson, Paul Gleason, and Alexander Godunov. 1230pm: PC is 'Off' and will hit the PO box at Walgreens and then walk the neighborhood.  105pm: Walgreens PO BOX,  Washington, Adams, South on Douglas, Lynnwood, North on Bates, Wash.Pk, got fenced in at the Carillon Art Sale, Parkview and down to 940...2 HOURS...Mp3...ORNETT COLEMAN, STONES, PAVEMENT. ***The old dentist, Dr. Gekes, stopped me while I was walking a...

Watched 'CONTROL' (Amazon Prime). Ian Curtis was a Gloomy Gus, but such a waste that he took his life at only 23 years old. The film is based on a memoir by Deborah Curtis. A beautiful film and won 31 awards and nominated for 35 total; with Sam Riley and Samantha Morton. The PC is 'Off' and preparing for the treadmill and maybe a walk outside later.  115pm: On the treadmill...5 MILES AT 3.6 PACE...Finished the ALDOUS SNOW film and began ANTHONY JESELNIK on 'HoneyDo'. I finally got it to load, playing Sonny Stitt, then getting a 'service error'.  Watched 'COLORS' (Kanopy). A star-studded, late 80's lurid, and a bit ham-fisted, depiction of gang violence in the barios of Los Angeles...Two bulls standing on a hill: The younger one says, "Hey, let's run down and fuck a cow". The older one says, "No, let's walk down and fuck'em all"; with Sean Penn, Robert Duvall, Don Cheadle, Damon Wayans, and Seymour Cassel. Directed by Dennis Hopper, cinematography by Haskell Wexler, and music by Herbie Hancock.   Watched episodes 3 and 4 of 'THE FROZEN DEAD' (Netflix). A lot of moving parts, but well worth a look. Yesterday evening Janny mentioned a movie with Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth that I had never heard of and I found it on Kanopy. It's today's Morning Movie. Spent some time setting up the ATT Benefits for the open enrollment. How does AON fit into the plan?  ***The city picked up the pile of branches at the abandoned house next door.    Watched 'SUPERNOVA' (Kanopy). A moving portrait of a gay couple as they deal with the approaching horror of dementia.   Su 9/5/21 9am. 1050am (a pinch). 315pm. 955pm.  Up 710am: Bright and sunny with temps to about 80. Watched the rest of Netflix disc 2 'JOHN ADAMS'. It certainly dispels the notion that the founding fathers were all in agreement..."The Gangrene of Factions"... Many in the senate did not even feel that the president should be allowed to select his own cabinet.  Watched 'LORELEI' (Hoopla). A gritty tale of the relationship between a recently released biker/ex-con and a hotel maid with three kids (by three different men). Not exactly believable, but a storyline that was truly somewhat original; with Jena Malone and Pablo Schreiber (ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK).  130pm: PC is 'Off' and will walk over to the Walgreens PO box to drop the disc and clear my head. Then, the dead come back to life, but can't speak. A police trainee misses his sister, yet she's always with him. A strange movie and similar to the 'found footage' genre and with a little more work this one could have been really great. Filmed in New Harmony, Indiana and Harmonie State Park. Watched 'THE FAREWELL' (Amazon Prime).
